Comment Re:Where is this electricity coming from? (Score 3, Interesting) 185

Gas power plant --> transmission --> charge electric car --> move electric car is significantly more efficient than the car burning any type of fuel. That is not counting any regenerative power gains under braking which are standard in consumer electric vehicles.

Also I assume you are trying to intimate a nuclear power station, in which case perhaps you want to look at the Hinkley Point power station which is a nuclear plant currently under construction.

The posts can have a pinpad on them. This prevents juice theft.

As for curb parking they are already investing in chargers that pop up from the ground and have contactless payment systems.

As for system type it probably doesn't matter as they all have converted plugs between type 1 and type 2. The biggest factor is having the electrical circuit wired in and a suitable plug type. The additional cost at build would be tiny, sparky is already on site, there is no skin on the building, so it's literally 1 extra circuit connection ,some heavy gauge wire and the wall plate extra.

Comment Electric demand or fuel efficiency requirements? (Score 0) 227

Not from the US, so is this a case where there is mandated numbers / fleet % that must be electric, or is it a fleet fuel efficiency target?

If it is the second then the legislation is working as intended, it will make low efficiency vehicles more expensive over time. If it's the former then thats just a totally random bit of legislation.

It hurts to stare at because it's bright.

As for your energy efficiency your single incandescent bulb consumes as much power as approx half my houses entire lighting system (based on a 60w bulb). In my office I have 3 x 6500k LED downlights and it feels like I'm sitting outside the colour and the brightness is that nice. The idea of going back to that horrible yellow colour gives me shudders.

Comment Re:why some couples do not have children (Score 1) 86

Issues with the child are rarely the reason why couples can't have children. Many people, both those with reproductive issues and those without, will have children that miscarry or are born with problems irrespective of how the female becomes pregnant.

It is usually to do with the reproductive system of one of the parents. eg not enough active sperm in the male, hormone resistance in the female, polycycstic ovaries, etc.

For us my wife's body was resistant to estrogen. This meant she effectively didn't have a cycle and didn't produce eggs which were mature enough to be fertilized. She needed large doses of follicle stimulating hormone for the first 14 days of her cycle follower by a massive does of HCG and then an operation to harvest the eggs.

Outside of this though she was perfectly able to carry a baby to term. So after the harvest cycle she had lower doses of FSH to get the lining of her uterus ready and then had an embryo transplanted.

We now have two happy healthy girls.

Comment Re:Because windows works well enough (Score 1) 966

Not at a low level no.

There are a bunch of things I get frustrated about when using widows. NFS mounts of file shares, realtime access to googledrive rather than synced, having an ssh client by default instead of needing putty, multiple desktops, a better "windows explorer", but none of those are things to make the move to linux, they are things that make going back to windows annoying.

Comment Re:Because windows works well enough (Score 1) 966

Linux is a lot easier than that these days. TBH installing something like Linux Mint on a new machine is easier than installing Windows and much much quicker.

The DVD thing is a thing of the past and now with steam running a stack of games the barrier is much lower.

That said, the incentives just aren't there. Being able to close a window with a middle mouse click, or press f3 for a split filebrowser page aren't enough incentive.
