Comment Re:So we are talking about the ability (Score 1) 25

I think one of the problems people have is that they don't understand the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire. It's easy to say well, it's about a billion dollars but the Gap is so much larger than folks realize.

As sad as it is, it's not hard to spend a million dollars nowadays. A nice (not extravagant) house will cost you $250-300k in many areas of the US. A vacation house will be that much or more (even if it's smaller than your primary home). Treat yourself to a nice vehicle, $50-100k. Start spending $10-15k on a few vacations each year, the money can run out. My brother and I used to play a game of trying to spend a million dollars and we were kids but our numbers were pretty accurate and we had a hard time doing it ! Now, a billion dollars ?? Realistically speaking, it would be really hard to "blow" that amount of money unless you're an absolute idiot.

That's why it was better back in Detroit's glory days, when battery hold-downs were made of real metal.

Of course, they routinely rusted out after a few years, and I had at least one car where the battery just slid around loose in the tray. If only I had seen this article back then, I probably would have tried to fix it :)

People are talking about two different things. The post above is referring to the plastic, hinged cover that goes over the positive battery terminal. Those do break frequently on some cars because of the plastic they chose to use. I've personally never seen a plastic battery hold-down bracket. Not saying they don't exist, of course. They've all been metal, usually the J-hook type with two threaded rods and then a metal bar that goes between those rods. Most have a rubbery or plastic piece molded over the bar to help from cutting into the battery if someone gets overzealous tightening it down.

The next step is for YouTube to start inserting ads as part of the original video

Ughhh, imagine if YT does this on top of videos that already have the "I want to thank XXX for being one of our sponsors. XXX will help you with this and that and blah, blah, blah..." for 2-3 minutes.

I use uBlock Origin, and I haven't seen any new behavior yet. YouTube's working the same as it has for a long time.

uBlock Origin is still getting beat by YouTube, then uBO catches up, then YT beats them, and the cycle keeps repeating. uBO is updating their filters every (12) hours in order to win against YouTube and I'm not sure how long they will continue doing that. If you haven't encountered a blocked video, it's just lucky timing on your part.

Comment Installation problem, not a Toyota fault (Score 1) 62

I know too many people see "battery" and jump on the anti-EV bandwagon but this has nothing to do with that. It's also no fault of Toyota's for what is happening here as it specifically is related to replacement batteries, not Toyota-installed ones. This is an installation failure and not a Toyota defect. Good on Toyota for taking care of it though.

Comment The return of /. ? (Score 3) 299

When I first read about the planned blackout of reddit, I kept thinking maybe slashdot.org could make a big return ! This was my reddit back in '97-98 with CmdrTaco.

As for the blackout/boycott, I haven't opened Apollo since Sunday evening and on my computers, I removed my 'bookmark' just to avoid the temptation. I kinda want to see what it looks like but don't want to contribute any clicks or visits either so I do my part in showing the impact.

Comment Re:Why didn't they try to cover? (Score 4, Informative) 59

Apollo offers a subscription option and the developer has already indicated that even if he applied all of that to the reddit 'charges', it wouldn't be enough. This is obviously based on the current number of users that pay for a subscription. Will thousands and thousands of users switch from the free version to subscription ? I really doubt it.
