Pretty sure that one human employee could scan groceries 4 times faster than people doing it themselves, so those self-check registers are saving them... absolutely nothing.
How long it takes customers to scan only cost them more if it causes there to be fewer sales, and there is zero evidence to support that it does.
And they are seeing a lot more "shrinkage", although I'm not sure whether it is due to intentional or accidental failure to scan items.
I guarantee you that they are accounting for shrink, and that the savings on labor expense is far greater than even increased shrink.

Yes, they have teams of people who do exactly that. Metropolitan Council has a master water supply plan that includes this information for every municipal water source in the seven county region. I personally know people who are on the team that does that. Very, very smart people with lots of field experience and scientific know-how.

Most of the rest of the world is at lower latitudes than than North America and Europe, so they don't see the same variability of daylight. China is the big exception, but they only have one time zone, so they've got their own relationship with time that isn't really comparable to the rest of the world.

Your statement is not a refutation of the one you're responding to. He was talking about Standard Time, not a standard schedule. You can sleep more in the winter than in the summer on Standard Time just as easily as you can on DST.

As a natural night owl, nothing sucks more than having to wake up before it's light out. Our bodies are not made for that. If the issue is to get rid of the time changes, standard time would be much more sensible.
