30 years ago? Roger Waters warned people about Record Companies 50 years ago. Check out the lyrics from "Have A Cigar" where Waters writes the song about a Record Company Exec talking to the band:

"Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar
You're gonna go far, you're gonna fly high
You're never gonna die
You're gonna make it if you try
They're gonna love you

Well, I've always had a deep respect
And I mean that most sincerely
The band is just fantastic
That is really what I think
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
We call it Riding the Gravy Train

We're just knocked out
We heard about the sell-out
You gotta get an album out
You owe it to the people
We're so happy we can hardly count

Everybody else is just green
Have you seen the chart?
It's a hell of a start
It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
We call it Riding the Gravy Train"

AI still has a long way to go before it is a reliable source of solutions, especially in the business world. Just the other day one of our developers was having drive space issues on his Linux box. Our management has been pushing AI hard, so he consulted with Gemini on how he could free up space on his machine. The AI recommended he use:

rm -rf /

The AI was happy to recommend this as a valid solution to the disk space problems. Lucky this dev has a shred of common sense and decided not to go through with the "solution".

I don't think people are necessarily against online devices, they are more opposed to how these devices have been deployed by their manufacturer. These companies have turned usable products into invasive spying tools or cash grabs. If these devices only went online for their intended purpose people would be fine with them, but instead corporations make them always listening, always harvesting, always abusing for the company's gain, not for user benefit. Take a digital picture frame that could show pictures from a online location such as Google Drive, or a NAS. That would be great, but some genius thought wouldn't it be great if it were to show ad's on the frame as well, or charge a subscription fee to use a frame you already paid for. Or by bricking old devices when they roll out a newer version that milks the user for more money thereby making the old device "obsolete". People are tired of this shit. Enshitification ruined these devices, not the online portion. Online connections can be very useful... but once they start adding "features" that really have no benefit for the end user, people would rather just say "no thanks."

I'm one of those monsters. I've never used a phone case and this may be shocking to some, I have also never cracked/broken any of them. In my experience, people who put their phones in cases are more likely to be careless with their devices as a case brings a false sense of security. My naked phone looks new and shiny like the day it was purchased, compared that to the many otterbox encased phones with spiderweb cracked glass... The device isn't the problem, the problem is the users who are not mindful of what they are doing when handling the device.

So pretty much every single company's road warrior sales rep...who's jobs when it comes to their computer is pretty much reply to emails, talk on the phone and give PowerPoint presentations. That seems to me like there is a market. Maybe it just wasn't advertised very well...

And you seem to be completely out of touch with the problem of environmental e-waste. Many devices could have their usable life extended by multiple years if these corporations made devices that were sustainable and not designed to be replaced. Which is easily achievable by implementing simple things that these devices used to have such as user upgradable RAM slots and replaceable batteries for starters. It's especially sad when these very same corporations greenwash the shit out of everything to make it sound like they give a shit about the planet.

It's not just Netflix that struggles to make good movies. 99% of all movies released in the last decade haven't been worth the time it takes to watch them. They have become so poor, that I have just stopped watching new movies. I still enjoy watching older movies because the focus was to make a movie that lets the viewer escape from reality for a couple hours, tells a good story and has relatable, likable characters. It seems most movies today focus on representation, being unoffensive, CGI overkill and pushing the political agenda flavor of the month. A great recipe to make a movie nobody wants to watch.

Canada stopped producing the penny over a decade ago and life went on. By ditching the penny, it saved the government millions of dollars a year. If something is $3.99 and you pay via debit, you pay $3.99. If you pay with cash the price is rounded up to the nearest .05, so $4.00. If that price variation is rage inducing, you have bigger problems, for everybody else it was a non-event.

This isn't a fair study for AI because it only looks at LLM's that have been neutered in order to have safe answers. LLM's will only be as creative as their training data and/or limitations put in place by the controlling company. When guardrails are put in place, the LLM will filter out any possible ideas considered radical or fringe. Some of the best ideas don't even get a spot at the starting line with current LLM's because they may be considered too "outside of the box". This isn't a problem with AI, but the people who are creating it.
