I canâ(TM)t believe it hasnâ(TM)t been mentioned in this thread already. Mercedes-Benz didnâ(TM)t make it illegal. Technically, what happened, was that all vehicles were illegal, and Bill Gates wanted to import. I think a 983 or something. And he lobby to have that 25 year clause so he could import his Porsche.

No.

Thatâ(TM)s my answer. No. At this point the âoedesktopâ is moot.

Fifteen years from now âoedesktopâ will mean workstations. And a tiny sliver of the populace will use them.

I used to work in IT and in my new role everything is an app on my phone. So who cares if I run Void or Open BSD on my laptop?

I feel like itâ(TM)s becoming like being the biggest coachbuilder a decade after society switched to automobiles.

for years. Apple, Microsoft, Google, all of them Have Issues. Smaller, more nimble, companies may be more easily contacted, but it often takes knowing someone who can bypass the various gatekeepers.

And not just in software. Several years ago I had a highly repeatable weird glitch while closing the top of my German convertible. Couldn't seem to get it fixed. Complained to Warren Brown (RIP) at the Washington Post during an online chat, and two days later I got a call from a regional engineering guy at the car company, and was in that weekend getting a switch replaced.

Comment Fun With Unicode (Score 1) 76

Windows gets upset if you mix codepages. I suspect Linux and Mac do, too. Sure, mixing US/GB codepages shouldn't cause much trouble. But mixing Hebrew and US causes all sorts of fun, since the text moves in different directions. And Chinese can move vertically in addition to horizontally. If you don't start each snippet of text with the byte order mark things can get weird.

Congrats to those chemists! I hope that they enjoy the honor and prize money.

I don't put much faith in the awards themselves though. They gave a Nobel prize to the creators of the lobotomy.

They gave peace prizes to President Obama and Henry Kissinger.

Not to mention all is the economic prizes which aren't even technically Nobel prizes.
