Journal GeckoFood's Journal: [geek] Ending my Relationship with the Opera Browser 8

I have been using the Opera browser for quite some time. It has worked well for me about 95% of the time and when it has not I have always had FireFox loaded so I could keep moving. That has just come to a complete end.

Check this out. So, Opera is being acquired by Qihoo, which makes Opera now a Chinese-controlled application (well, soon to be anyway). I have a deep distrust of Chinese software (and I have good reasons for that) and I question the motivations behind the buyout. What will be added behind the scenes to the browser and what data will it collect and send home? I do not intend to make it easy for China to collect my data, though I am sure they have more than I would like to imagine..

For now I am on Firefox. But Vivaldi is looking like a solid competitor in the making. It's not yet up to scratch, but it's functional enough and I like the interface except for the default font.

Goodbye, Opera. It was fun while it lasted.

    At least I think so...

I never left Firefox. Last time I actively used Opera was on Linux when my Pentium 120 was getting long in the tooth. Back then it was the only viable Linux browser.

Yes, I know. I know the very large majority have left here. At this point I am not even sure where they went anymore. Google+ was the last known location and I just wasn't into the site. I heard rumors that Google was going to kill off G+ due to lack of popularity, but I am not sure if that was true or not. Anyway, I have a suspicion that some still lurk as I have done. If anyone chooses to comment, that's fine with me. If not, I hav

      • Yes, well, I'm lurking and I can be found ... well ... on all social media ;-) I moved most writing to my own blog, though. Not that I have a large and captive audience.
      • I don't think Google will actually kill G+ off any time soon - that would be too embarrassing a retreat - but they've finally stopped shoving it down people's throats as hard as they were before. (Amusingly, I re-connected recently with an old friend from university who is now fairly senior in Google. Where did we connect? Facebook. Says it all, really...) The only place I've seen bits of "Circle" lately is on Twitter, plus a few I've added on Facebook. I took a look on Brewmasters when someone tried to nud

        • I never liked Multiply though it was well-suited for a social group. I was a little surprised when it went away - seems like the company decided it just wasn't interested in social media anymore.

      • Anyway, I have a suspicion that some still lurk as I have done.

        I admit to nothing.
