Journal GMontag's Journal: New term to me: archaeological restoration 5

archaeological restoration == as bad as original

I knew people were doing this, but just heard a bit of it on the car auction show on SPEED.

Instead of restoring a car and making all of the panels fit, you misfit them a bit, put waves in the paint, use old paint instead of good modern paint, and I guess add some bad grounds and crappy brake connections.

Idunno if I am down with this. I like keeping stock, but I lean beter than stock and very mild custom. "Mild custom" is much too strong for me. My idea of mild custom is covering the floor pan and the roof under the vinyl with rust-proof paint, under car too. No asphalt undercoating, newer stuff. Modern paint the same color and better finish than stock. Stuff like that. I guess I am "better than factory/mild custom". Other people are "winter" or something (heard on Loveline like 10 years ago).

I guess if you prefer a "factory" car to a better car, cool, that is what you are into. But I don't see paying extra for it.

One of my dreams long term will be to restore a 69 Camaro like my old man had but there's not a chance of me trying to throw a carb'ed 396 in there when I can get a crated 8.1 from GM performance. That being said, I'd have a tough time deciding if the original lineage was a rare(r) type (SS/RS, M21 Close ratio 4 speed in the camaro's case), but this mess of chalk marking the frame and number matching crap like the bra
  • Some friends and I used to restore Jeep CJs. Original is nice, but a modern ignition system did wonders for the reliability. It is nice when your hobby car can be used as a daily driver as well.

Human beings were created by water to transport it uphill.
