Journal GMontag's Journal: 311,111 miles and ticking 5

The hydeogen powered Jeep ticked off mile 311,111 at mile marker 39 on VA I-81 yesterday. Last Saturday the Jeep went over 310,000 on Bolling AFB, Washington, DC.

No major drivetrain repairs. Clutch pedal mechanism, radiator, HVAC blower motor, something else I can't remember.

Same clutch as from factory.

  • How much did you pay to have your radiator replaced? I noticed the radiator in my '95 Wrangler is getting pretty bad as I was replacing the water pump a couple of weeks ago.........

$950 for a new 3 core radiator and installation, I think. It was a about 3 or 4 years ago and thought I posted about it but can't find it.

Asked a MOPAR guy at the Bolling AFB Auto Skills Center about MOPAR radiators, because he had to replace the one on his truck not long ago. He just laughed and said that is an item you might as well expect to replace every few years.
      • $950? Ouch. I recently found some online for about $200-$250. I'll probably buy one of those and replace it myself. That's one of the things I like about my Wrangler, it's relatively easy to get to everything under the hood. Unlike say, our 2005 minivan.......

  • I've noticed that some motors seem to run forever with only normal maint., while others are really prone to failure. My father had a early 90s Grand Wagoneer that developed all sorts of problems: several trannies, bent valve rods, etc.

Did you get "a good one" or is your drive train noted for being reliable?

I've owned a few Toyotas that would just run and run and run, including a '72 LandCruiser FJ-40. It made me stand out among all the guys with the CJs.

      4.0L 6 cil., manual tranny, select-trac 4wd.

I hear that it has a reputation for reliability, plus I had a dynamic preventative maintenance program. Now I just do the almost normal stuff, nothing extreme. I accidentally let oil changes on both vehicles slip into 6 months, so both are over due by 3 mos.
