How is justice served by tacking on a hate crime? I personally don't see the benefit. Either the kids are guilty of beating and sodomizing this kid or they are not. Despite what some sick folks think, beating and sodomizing someone is never a love crime.

Trying to outlaw racisim is like trying to outlaw hating green beans. You can make hating green beans, but those that hate them are going to continue to hate them.

  • Though, I'd point out at least a part of this crime *does* come from the stereotype Americans have of Machismo attitude of Mexicans. I'm not sure this "crime" should be punished very severely at all- perhaps probation after a relatively short jail term? From my point of view, the white kids were protecting the innocent- in a very inappropriate vigilante manner, but the real victim here is the 12-year-old girl, not the Mexican. I've seen enough Machismo and ignorance of standard American sexual mores that
    • While the girl may be the victim of unwanted attention from this hispanic boy, we do not have that information in this article. Perhaps she was interested in this boy (not that it would be proper, as he was 16 and she was 12). It is an issue for the parents to work out, and possibley state involvement if this is a case of harrasment.

        Maybe- but I'm pointing out this is a major point of conflict between American and Mexican culture. I used to get beaten for that behavior- I never filed charges over it. Of course- this beating went a bit far- and you're right, the bleach indicates some premeditation (where did they get the idea that bleach destroys DNA though?). Never had the state involved either, and rarely parents- brothers
  • What about the possibility of diversity training and education teaching people that hating green beans is just wasted energy? Hating something is an emotional investment in disliking it. Why not just dislike the green beans without all the baggage?
    • The idea of diversity training is also repulsive to me. Atleast government enforced diversity training. The government should not be in the business of trying to shape folks' attitudes and beliefs. Cause what happens if some group you disagree with gets into power and starts forcing education according to it's whims?

      • I don't really think the government should enforce diversity training, although if you think about it, they already do so. What we get is no training at all, which is very bad training. That the group in charge presently doesn't enforce anything at all kind of is already like a disagreeable group getting into power and forcing education according to its whims - they're just very bad whims.
