Journal FortKnox's Journal: Working out 9

Just a quickie. I've settle on a few New Years resolutions. For the record, this is my first 'new years resolution'. Normally, I set myself to do some good Lent promises, and mostly pull through with them. Some I even keep afterward (like no caffeine). Now I am ready for some sweeping changes.
I'm a 5'10" 160lbs weakling. I'm changing that. I'm going to work out. I already have a free month at "Gold's Gym" which is a good 10 minute drive away, and a 14 day free pass to "Fitworks" which is almost within walking distance. I will visit the latter first thing Saturday, and the former Sunday afternoon. I have multiple goals:
1.) Energy
2.) Strength
3.) Looking buff (who doesn't want to be ripped??)
4.) Working out multiple times during the week, always in the morning. This is to help me get to work early (I've been getting in later and later), and to give me the energy to get through work without laz-ing out well before I leave.

Other goals include time with my kids. I need to play with Joey more. I give Jenna plenty of attention, but not my son enough. I need to play with him when he's playing with his Cars, and take him outside and exercise with him (having 'energy' as I said above will help with this).

Last goal is to make sure I fix at least one thing a month with my house. Whether its regrading my back yard (it turns into a swamp with any decent rainfall), or something simple like reorganizing the basement.

I'm going to try to do the Tom Hudson thing of maintaining a list and checking weekly how I do, but I won't bore you guys unless I have pics of me looking buff (so if I stick to it, don't expect anything for at least a year) ;)
I will be taking a 'before' pic, but not showing it until the 'after' pic :P

Working out

  • I've always wanted to be one of those people who did the morning workout regiment. Part of it is a problem with sleep, but I get really dehydrated over night. Some nights I wake up craving water even though I drink a couple 32oz. bottles.

Good luck with the workout. Post more and I'll shout encouraging comments like a high school football coach.
    • Eat more salt.
    • I tried the morning workout regiment a year or so ago and it just didn't work out with my schedule. I have to be at work by 7:30am with a 30 minute drive from the YMCA, which is only about 10 minutes from our house. That usually meant that if I wanted a good workout I need to be at the YMCA no later than 5:30am.

Soooo, this past week I started going to the YMCA three days a week after work, and so far so good. The physical activity seems to help relieve the stress after a busy workday, and although I'm cu

I lost quite a bit of weight from not eating after surgery (enough that people have mentioned it); I think I want to keep the weight off (and heck maybe even lose a bit more). I have already been eating way better (one soda per day, and eating healthy snacks instead of crap from the vending machine). I figure if I exercise I could pretty easily shed another ten pounds. If I do, none of my pants will fit :-) (they are already pretty baggy and lose in the waist).

BTW you are one skinny dude :-D good luck with

  • 5'10" and 160 lbs? You're heavy! I'm 5'11" and 152 lbs! (Actually, I think 5'10" and 160lbs is really just about normal, certainly not underweight).

When I graduated from university, I was 5'11" and 140 lbs, so I've put on significant weight even at that...
  • Sophie is a black hole of time... you can spend 24 hours with her and it's not enough. Danny on the other hand seems to like 15 minute intervals separated by 18 hours.

Yet I feel the same way as you.

However you might want to blunty ask joey if he wants to play more.
  • I think I found it [mac.com].
  • Buy a good set of hand weights. I advise something interchangable and storable like the Spartan Sports 40 Pound Dumbbell Set with Case, so you can vary your weights and not have them take up much more space than a briefcase would. Also, this gives you something to exercise with at home (so when you talk yourself out of going to the gym, you can still exercise), without having that big piece of (for most people, mostly-unused) exercise equipment taking up space in your home.

I bought a set and started out
