Submission + - Cyberattack Reportedly Caused Hundreds of Pagers to Explode in Lebanon (securityweek.com) 1

wiredmikey writes: Hundreds of people, including Iran’s ambassador, were wounded in Lebanon after their handheld pagers exploded in what a Hezbollah official speculated was a malware attack that caused the pagers to heat up and explode. Photos and videos from Beirut’s southern suburbs circulating on social media and in local media showed people lying on the pavement with wounds on their hands or near their pants pockets.

Officials pointed the finger at Israel in what appeared to be a sophisticated, remote attack at a time of rising tensions across the Lebanon border.

Submission + - Pagers explode injuring thousands (reuters.com)

Smonster writes: More than 1,000 people, including Hezbollah fighters and medics, were wounded on Tuesday when the pagers they use to communicate exploded across Lebanon, security sources told Reuters.

The wave of explosions lasted around an hour after the initial detonations, which took place about 3:45 p.m. local time (1345 GMT). It was not immediately clear how the devices were detonated.

Large numbers of “wireless devices” simultaneously exploded across Lebanon in an apparently coordinated attack that caused hundreds of injuries, Lebanese health officials said on Tuesday, a day after Israeli leaders warned that they were considering stepping up their military campaign against Hezbollah.
In other footage, an explosion appeared to knock out someone standing at a fruit stand at a market area. Lebanon’s crisis operations center, which is run by the health ministry, asked all medical workers to head to their respective hospitals to help cope with the massive numbers of wounded coming in for urgent care. It said health care workers should not use pagers.
The Lebanese Red Cross said more than 50 ambulances and 300 emergency medical staff were dispatched to help in the evacuation of victims.

The Lebanese Red Cross said in a statement that 80 ambulances were responding to “multiple bombings” in southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as in Beirut, the capital, and Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces Directorate asked people to clear the roads so people could be rushed to hospitals.

The blasts appeared to be the latest salvo in an 11-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that began last October, after Hezbollah began firing into Israeli territory in solidarity with its ally, Hamas. The conflict has largely remained contained to exchanges of missiles and rockets, but for months, leaders on either side have warned that it could expand into a war involving ground forces.

Submission + - Canadian petition that games must remain functional at EOL (ourcommons.ca)

Zitchas writes: The practice of having games require a connection to a publisher's server — whether it is to check for a license or to access plug-ins and DLC — is an increasingly common thing in computer software; and many people are concerned that at some point in the future the publisher will shut down their server, and effectively render the person who paid for the game left with something that no longer functions. This has already happened to some games and software

Concerned citizens in Canada are taking the issue to their Parliament in order to push for a law that will mandate that when the server-side support for software is discontinued, companies must leave it in a functional state and remove mandatory connections to servers & services that no longer exist.

Perhaps even more importantly, the petition also asks government to pass a law prohibiting EULA's from forcing users to agree to waiving their right to this.

Unfortunately, the petition is only open to citizens of Canada, so the rest of us are out of luck. Considering the potential benefits to the rest of the world if they enact legislation that does this, though, it might be worth suggesting to any of your Canadian friends to go sign the petition...

If Linux is going to be used on computers that don't meet Windows 11 requirements (but still support Windows 10) then it's going to have to start supporting the hardware of that era. First and foremost, that means defaulting to MBR (or at least giving the option) when creating the installation media. Many distros I've looked at can't even do that!

Submission + - Signal to phase out SMS support from the Android app (twitter.com)

schwit1 writes: In the interest of privacy, security, and clarity we’re beginning to phase out SMS support from the Android app. You’ll have several months to export your messages and either find a new app for SMS or tell your friends to download Signal.

I just tried it and even that's buggy. It visually makes the menu smaller, but move your mouse up and down just to the right of a menu. The menu highlight bar follows the mouse cursor even when it's not over the menu. You can click on those menu items as well, even when you're not over the menu.

Submission + - EA releases source code for CnC (github.com)

UnknownSoldier writes: EA has released the source code for two of their classic RTS games in the Command and Conquer series: CnC: Red Dawn and CnC: Tiberian Dawn on GitHub. Interesting trivia:
  • Source code is around 5 MB.
  • There are no art of sound assets.
  • Filenames are all in capitals. This makes it easy to tell what was added for the Remaster.
  • The path finding is NOT using the usual A* algorithm but the "Crash and Turn" algorithm.
  • Searching the source for PETROGLYPH_EXAMPLE_MOD shows an example of how to add a mod.
