Comment Target practice for air force/naval planes? (Score 1) 236

A friend of mine once told us a story about how the (Australian) air force uses lost floating shipping containers for target practice. That is, when they encounter these floating shipping containers, they fire on them to blow them up / clear the floating hazard.

Is there any truth to this or is it just an old wives tale?

angry tapir writes: "The global race for supercomputing power continues unabated: Germany's Bavarian Academy of Science has announced that it has contracted IBM to build a supercomputer that, when completed in 2012, will be able to execute up to 3 petaflops, potentially making it the world's most powerful supercomputer. To be called SuperMUC, the computer, which will be run by the Academy's Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany, will be available for European researchers to use to probe the frontiers of medicine, astrophysics and other scientific disciplines."

Apple Orders 10 Million Tablets? 221

Arvisp writes "According to a blog post by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, Apple plans to produce nearly 10 million tablets in the still-unannounced product's first year. If Lee's blog post is to be believed, Apple plans to sell nearly twice as many tablets as it did iPhones in the product's first year."

or even hourlong TV shows shortened by stripping out the commercials

Don't you mean 'or even 40 minute long TV shows that would usually be drawn out to an hour with commercials'
