Journal Ethelred Unraed's Journal: "12 generals and admirals endorse Kerry" 15

US Newswire: 12 Generals and Admirals Endorse John Kerry; Military Leaders to Speak and Take Part in Video Tribute in Boston Wednesday

Interesting to note that the Democrats are playing the military card so much this time around. This is the first time since, oh, Kennedy that they've done so...

A couple of the endorsements also surprise me a little. I always thought of Adm. Crowe as leaning more Republican, for example (he was CJCS under Reagan). Others, like Gens. Clark or Shalikashvili, aren't much of a surprise at all. And you'd think Gen. Zinni would be on the list, but he isn't.

  • Wasn't the Clinton platform heavy on defense?

    • dude, from the military's standpoint, Clinton was a fucking bastard.

Every single person I knew in the military hated him.

We didn't make SHIT for pay, and that fucker tried to cut it several times. (I ain't got the links, but he was president the whole time I was in)

He was "heavy" on defense if you call being heavy on it meaning strip it down and sell it.

BTW, in that ad for Kerry, Under General Hoar's blurb, they spelled Marine Corps Marine Crops.

Lovely. I catch this in 10 seconds of proof reading?
      • Actually it's just a newswire bit about an upcoming Ad for Kerrey.

        Someone dyslexic is, however.
        • yeah, I saw that.

Man, I can't wait til whatever stuffed shirt who wins the election takes office. So all this political stuff will go away.

Give this man a cigar! No matter what his political views might be compared to mine I agree 100% that I can't wait until this is all over. I HATE POLITICS!!! But you just can't seem to escape them these days.

        • Someone dyslexic is, however.

Probably relied too much on their spell-checker. "Crops" is of course also a word, and therefore wouldn't be highlighted in a spell check...

Then again, maybe Marines are grown in crops?

          Cheers,

      • Clinton didn't do too badly by the Navy. They get the Seawolfs George H.W. Bush tried to scrap, the new Virgina Class, as well as the Littoral Combat Frigate. During that time, the Air Force also began starting to produce its F-22 and began trials for the F-35. The Army got upgraded Abrams, Stryker and a few other toys like that new artillery system they're still dicking with. The Marines, well, they got Osprey.

The problem with the Clinton Military wasn't that he wasn't spending money, instead, it was

        • you're right. As far as toys goes, Clinton did pretty good.

As far as creating esprit de corps among the troops, he did a horrible job.
      • I was in at the same time and I saw guys with 10, 12 even 16 years in being forced out. That policy really screwed the job prospects for a soon to be getting out Airwing guy like myself and others suddenly wondering what to do for a living. That and the aerospace industry as a whole just tanking really led to some lean times for anyone trying to get a job in that sector. Clinton was a buggerer to the military.
they spelled Marine Corps Marine Crops
Heh at least it wasn't Core or Corpse :P
      • Well, I didn't say he had a GOOD platform, just that I recalled he had an active platform on defense issues. Or, lack of defense issues.... :/

Just another reason for me to think he was a goat-blowing hick that gets too much credit, I suppose.

  • I vaguely recall him supporting Clinton.
  • Clinton did spend money on programs, but often the leaders had to choose between infrastructure upgrades or weapon systems. So, do we replace the F16 which is 25 years old, or do we upgrade the Army barracks which are 50 years old?

Under Clinton, most of the goals to modernize were way behind. Also factor in the large reduction in force (RIF) movements. This is the same as Sprint's CEO saying, "What downturn, we're still making a profit!" I'm sure the thirty or forty thousand people who got laid off can

    • Every single respondant was retired; no serving officer since MacArthur has had the gumption to challenge an incumbent president. You cannot dictate that a retired officer remain out of politics. Washington, Jackson, W. Harrison, Taylor, Pierce, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, B. Harrison, and Eisenhower were all generals.
      • You are entirely correct. It shouldn't be dictated, but to me, it grays the line. For example, with the investment banks, it seems to gray the lines when they both research and sell stocks. With NASA, they ran into problems when quality control was coupled with project management (meeting deadlines).

Again, this isn't a position I could defend with facts, and history shows a clear line of exceptions. Some military leaders make great politicians. However, I find it disingenuous for reasons I'll save fo
