Journal Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Minnesotans always knew it 9
LPetrazickis mentioned it in passing in his journal, right after accusing me of being biased to the center-right (!), but I was delighted to note that North Dakota really is a disaster area.
(Though one is forced to wonder what the hell happens in North Dakota to warrant all those disaster area declarations, aside from North Dakotans being there.)
Interestingly, the area around Blacksburg, Virginia also seems to be a permanent disaster area. My having lived and studied there has nothing to do with it, I swear.

My wife always scoffs at how the Grand Forks Herald touts that they are "award winning", just because they stayed open during the flood. Big deal. The front page is in 76 pt font. You have no news. Aside from losing 900 spots at the Alerus center due to construction. Bringing your total down to 7,600. Then complain about how UND football games can draw 12,000 (what, the whole state?!). Well, the hoary old joke about Minnesota is that it has just two seasons: winter and road repair.
What's worse: my first winter in Minnesota was the winter of '83-'84, which IIRC had more than double the annual average snowfall. By January. I thought we were going to drown in the stuff. Worse, I had moved there from Virginia, where "heavy snow" meant a couple inches.
