...to go for the hat trick on JEs for the day:

Gloriana smiled at me today. Nice, big smile. And the world is a better place.

From Day One she could also already hold her head up -- pretty amazing for a newborn. And she's already started to vocalize a little. (Though no important speeches as of yet.) She's only a hair over two weeks old, too...wow.

Meanwhile, a few days ago I had to take our dear Rover to the shop. Seems some asshole smashed the passenger-side mirror (I suspect, but can't prove, that it was the trash collectors), and now that MG Rover is essentially defunct, getting parts is a little tricky. Be that as it may, the shop duly took on the car for servicing, and gave me a loaner.

And what a loaner. An old Austin Mini Clubman (or "Clubby" for short). Not sure what year exactly, probably mid-1970s, but in pretty good condition.

One of the Confessor's first words (and the one he uses the most) is "car" (I kid you not), so he and I were delighted. In fact as I was getting behind the wheel, he excitedly climbed in next to me, making his "vroom vroom" noises the whole time.

I was actually kinda sorry to give the thing up. Yes, it was temperamental and bitchy to drive -- just getting it into reverse was a pain. It kinda threw me to drive a car with a manual choke, too -- it's been years since I've done that -- and after having gotten used to a car with A/C, anti-lock brakes and power steering, it was hard to handle. The ride on the cobblestone streets in our neighborhood were enough to shake my teeth loose. But I loved it. The Confessor got a big kick out of it, too.

We were thinking of buying a second car...hmmmm...

  • Confessor looks more worried than excited to me. He probably knows his reign will soon fall to his little sis.

      I don't believe this. He takes his POS Honda castoff back to the orphanage, and the loaner they give him is this decrepit old shitbox? If our next car isn't a Toyota, the overthrow's gonna happen a helluva lot sooner than he ever expected!

      And what is up with these matching Twins caps? Does he think this is cute? Just for spite, my next two words are going to be "white" and "sox".

      • Is it the camera angle or does the Confessor have a bigger head than Ethelred?
        • perspective. Confessor's head will only grow marginally through childhood. confessors head to body ratio is going to drop dramatically durring those same years. Eth has a fully grown body, and is placed far behind the child. Thus the perspective has confessors head 'appearing' through an optical illusion to be larger than Eth.

          Of coruse the funny thing to say would be 'but of course, Eth's abnormally small cranial capacity is tiny in comparison to his son, who inherited a normal sized head from his mother

        Actually, he says he wants a Lotus. I pointed out that we can't afford one. He says I only think small.

        In reality, it's a great way for me to pick up chicks.

    I want that lil' car. I bet parking would be fun, and it is probably pretty decent on gas.

    Anyway, I will always remember both kiddos first smiles, and will treasure the little clover flower which is the first one my first daughter ever gave me; it is pressed between the pages of my favorite childhood book (Grimm's Fairy Tales).
