You're at a party where you only know a few people:

You are:

A) petrified, over by the plants, desperately trying to get noticed but afraid of what could happen if you do.

B) out on the patio, bonding with the smokers.

C) by the keg/bar/liquor cabinet, hitting on anything that moves.

D) on the table, dancing to some lamers I love the 80's soundtrack.

E) half naked, making out in the back bedroom.

F) sitting on the couch, chilling, letting conversation come and go.

G) standing in a corner, with a small audience, dominating the conversation.

H) On the porch, scaring the kids away with my wicked music knowledge. (this is for you, Mekka)

I) Other--I don't drink, I don't go to parties, I don't mingle, I'm _____, you insensitive clod.

J) passed out in the bedroom.

  • I'm at the bar/keg/common source of alcohol pouring drinks for everyone, chatting to them the whole time...so when everyone is good and wasted I'm remembered as 'the chick that gave me a beer' -- suddenly I've got plenty of people to talk to....
  • And in the blank, insert "Father and Husband".... if I go to a party, I know people there.
  • Mostly listening. I like to listen. Especially if I'm not supposed to be.

  • on the odd occassion I'm F. I don't give a fuck about being noticed and I'm not into small talk (cause I fail miserably at it).

    Its funny, when I have been in situations such as this... I've always been told that I'm interesting and intense in a laid-back sort of way and usually talk over people's heads and they find that entertaining -- but all I ever notice are glazed over eyes staring into space.

    But alas, I'd say that probably the best answer is 'I' and to fill in the blank: "a total loser."

    • i don't drink. i don't really like to go to parties where strangers meet. i'll go to parties with strangers, but only if i know some of the other people. i have no need to look for women. i do dig conversation. i like it on a one to one basis.

      most of my friends do drink, so i've learned to accept that. sometimes they get bummed that they can't share with me the joy that is a fine irish stout, but they understand it's not my gig. if they weren't my friends, i'd have no reason to hang around them. ha
      • I guess I'll buy you a coke if you ever come to Chi-town again then. Bottled water? ;)
        • how about some conversation? that's enough for me. if you need to get me a drink, ginger ale (or preferably ginger beer) is a solid choice.
          • Conversation? Can you smoke it, snort it, drink it, inhale it? :) Just kidding! That's a Farley quote from "Black Sheep". I only drink occasionally and never touched a drug.

            Ok, smart ass over....conversation would be nice! You could yell at me some more for being "a close-minded jackass who doesn't expand his mind and listen to anything other than rock." I *think* that was the quote IIRC! ;) (I guess the smart ass was NOT over.
            • you are correct, unless you like exactly the same music as me, in exactly the same amounts, you are a total loser who is not worth my time.

              or maybe i just made that up.

    but that's in general, with or without a party being involved. Say this last Friday. Went out to Harry Potter with a chunk of folks I don't know (a guy I work with's international dancing coterie). Anyway they asked if I was going to join. I said, no, as I was already getting roped into another's swing club.

    Her: "Oh that's good. Dancing's all good."

    Me: "Oh yeah, it's the Oxycotin of the dancing world."

    Yeah, I say that sort of shit in RL just like here. Really, if it isn't work I've got no reason

    It depends on the mood of the party. I'm definitely not a party leader, but if I'm diggin' the people, I'll become more involved. Test the waters my friend, test the waters.

    I usually know more music than the average person at parties (although I'm NOTHING like mekka, sielwolf, and Sam) so I'm usually ranting and raving about some bands here and there too. I like when I get into conversations about music at parties.

    By the way Em, it should be a rule that you always answer your poll question yourself! T

      you don't answer the poll yourself.

      But, if I must, I've been just about all of these at one time or another, but usually I get comfy on the couch near the liquor and hang out.

  • I prefer to come in, talk to the host and/or hostess, wander around listening in on some conversations. I'll stop if it sounds interesting and open (i.e. not a private conversation) or if I know someone. After joining that conversation or greeting that friend, I'll soon move on and repeat. After a relatively short period of time I'll either rejoin one of the more interesting groups or I'll say my goodbyes.

  • I'm mostly sitting on the couch, while the party happens around me. But there's elements of A) and H) in there too...
  • Possibly a bit of "by the booze" but only if there is anything good but with out the hitting on anything moving.

    • On second thought... since I only go to parties with people I know, I know what they drink, which is not crap, so I have one of whatever they have and that is good enough for the night.

      The rest of the time is spent haggling over who gets to play in the next round of Mario Party.

  • Just chilling, drinking a bud, watching the ladies... :)
  • I don't do well at parties where I don't know people. Even where I do know people, I'm not at my best. I prefer a conversation w/one or two people where there's no interruptions, not some big heaving sea of extroverts.
  • I am a notorious people watcher, so it's much more fun to sit on the sofa with a non-alchoholic drink and watch the interplay between everyone.
