    I don't like being fooled :[

    My dad pronounces it Lynn-nucks, a friend Lie-nucks, but I prefer Loon-icks ;]

I think it's befitting of a significant portion of the Slashdot population.
    • Gotta remember who's journal you clicked on. ;)

How's my beautiful former town treating you?
      • Heh, it's beautiful here- you're crazy to stay away ;]

A lot of the sexy college ladies are gone for the summer, but they've been replaced by exotic foreign tourists so it's all good.

I'm in the middle of finding a roommate/job, so unfortunately I haven't been able to get to the beach as much as I'd like. But I'm sure it's beautiful too.

  • I used to pronounce it Lie-Nucks (A), but I was corrected into the proper Lynn-Nucks.

I've always pronounced Linux as 'Lynn-nucks'. Linus pronounces it 'Lee-nooks', but what would he know? ;-)
    • i agree with arb.
    • Absolutely. The Swedish pronunciation is slightly awkward for non-Swedes.
    • And that .wav file that's been circulating has a digital signature by Linus himself? Or do you two just go out for brews every week or so and he pronounces it for you in person?

I mean, I could start a .wav hoax claiming it was pronounced WhoopWhoopWhoopDeFart and just say that I was Linus.

Just because you got something off of the 'net doesn't mean that it is real.
      • this is utter crap.

Everything on the internet is 100% true. For example, did you know that Elvis was spotted singing "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" with Sonny and Cher last week in Tupelo MS?

        It's true.

I saw it on the net.

Besides, I pronounce it whapwhapwhapdegas, not whoopwhoopwhoopdefart. Get with the program.

You have a funny perspective on life.
    • it isn't pronounced the way it looks. say it with a flourish, "fhqwhgads." now here's my take on linux.

"lee-nooks" (oo as in "foot", not as in "tooth")is technically correct, but linus also says himself that "lynnucks" is a correct pronunciation in english. (can't find the link) dictionary.com [reference.com] also agrees that both are correct. one entry specifically says that "lie-nucks" is incorrect.

loonix is fun to say and sometimes confuses people, especially "the loonix."
  • Even though it should be B, I could never bring myself to call it anything but C.

I think we need to start a campaign to Americanize Linus' name so that American's can be right more often. :)
  • It's "Lunix", Luu-neecks.

MOFG LOLOLOL ROFLROFL im s0 1337!!1!!

  • C is the closest, and the way everyone ought to say it. Sometimes I say Lynn-Icks because its easier to say. Two "I" sounds is simply. Too bad it wasn't spelled Liniks from the beginning.
  • We are the knights who say... Lynn-nucks
  • Actually between B and C. There's a wav out there of Linus saying it, and since he made up the word, the way he pronounces it *does* count.

C is the "Americanized" version. It's actually Lee-nucks with a shortened "e" sound. But I think it's okay for Americans to mispronounce foreign words.*

    * Before you non-Americans throw up your hands: you guys botch our language, so we get to botch yours too. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, I always say. :-P
    • Before you non-Americans throw up your hands: you guys botch our language

No no no. This is completely the wrong way round. You guys botch our language. You change the spelling, sometimes pronunciation, and fail to teach your kids how to use the language correctly in the first place (hint: insure and ensure mean very different things -- use the right one!). If you're going to butcher the language, you could at least have the courtesy to rename it, rather than pretending it's still English :-)

      Oh, and B/C

      • No no no. This is completely the wrong way round. You guys botch our language. You change the spelling, sometimes pronunciation, and fail to teach your kids how to use the language correctly in the first place (hint: insure and ensure mean very different things -- use the right one!).

Who's language? Oh, right...you're from the UK. Need I remind you who actually *won* the American Revolution? :-P (France ;)

      • insure and ensure mean very different things -- use the right one!).

Arg! I hate that. Insuring something does not ensure that something bad won't happen to it anyway. And I resent you blaming me for the stupidity of a few. (Or many. I've lost count.)

Poll Answer: I prounounce it GNU/Joe.

      • get over yourself. the queen's english and american english are different. it's been renamed. it's a variant not a whole new language, so the "english" part of the name stayed. and people accuse americans of being intolerant.

and just to throw something positive into this comment, i agree with you on this pronunciation question. i'm always amused when people try to correct me using the reasoning that his name is "lie-nus" and linux is named after him.
  • B is the closest to Linus' pronounciation (He pronounces it "Lee noocks (where the 'noo' is pronounced 'knew')")

But, being a midwesterner/eastener, I pronounce it "Lynn Nucks"
    • B.... I pronounce it as optio B... Because that's how you would pronounce it in dutch if you read it. I personally had trouble understanding the options until I tried to tell say them aloud in english.

So Lee-Nuks it is.... for me at least.

  • I pronounce it Wish-eye-wer-win-dows. So there. :-) Just kidding. I say C - Lynn-ucks.
  • A if you're using pure American phoenitics, B if you're Linus, and C if you used to use A and were corrected.
  • LIGnux

You scratch my tape, and I'll scratch yours.

Working...
