Poll, and do I have lurkers?

  • I don't pay attention to the maker of a shoe. It fits, it's comfortable, it's affordable, I buy it.

As for lurking, I'd have to rate myself as a near-lurker. I usually look at the JE when it first appears in my inbox, but not much after that; usually because they don't stick in my mind (not on the front page).

    • i'm also a follower of this method. i have brand loyalty for some things, but not sport shoes.

i do have several pairs of monochrome converse all-stars, but even though i use them for some athletic activity, they're not really the best athletic shoes. i also have some adidas cross trainers.
    • I don't care about the manufacturer either, I just buy something when I need new shoes.

I'd say that due to my large foot size, it must

Due to the limited selection here, my option is usually to suck it up off the rack, or custom order direct. That's why it is always nice to visit the parental-units, as they live in a real city that has more choices.

  • I've currently got Nikes, but hey, whatever's comfy I wear (Though I do like boots muchly).
  • I buy the same pair in black, every time. Been doing that for years. -Brent

I buy the same pair in black, every time. Been doing that for years.

Same here. Do you have any idea how hard it is to buy a pair of black trainers in the UK these days? Even the recent Reebok's have started adding splashes of non-black. I have to cut the tongue logo off when I get mine now. Here's a clue -- if I've gone out of my way to buy a compeltely black pair, I'm probably not going to want a big white logo on them...

  • New Balance? They're so light, it's like wearing socks made out of rubber and other shoe like materials.
  • When I was in high school, I went to a doctor to get insoles for my flat feet. She recommended that I get a pair of As or Bs, because they have better support. I think that other companies have improved over the years.

That being said, I don't buy those anymore, because I walk in a way that tries to compensate for the flat feet: sticking the ball of the feet down to push up the arch [or lack thereof]. Besides, I'm poor, so I don't want to spend much on shoes, unless I have to.

    Regarding reading your journal
  • Merrell [merrell.com] is the shiznit. I'm still wearing the same pair of multisports I wore up and down Fujisan last summer. Not a single blister on that hike. LOVE THEM.

I don't wear "sneakers" too much.. mainly just my same old dress shoes to work (they're timberlands, the only kind that don't fall apart after 6 months)

I suppose if I had to choose a fav, I'd go with reebok.
  • I exclusively buy Mephisto. Yes, I know it is a "old people's brand". But honestly: you put them on and they fit, they are comfortable and they last for years! (I only have two pairs: one of them has been around the world and is over 5 years old)

Never again I want shoes that your feet needs to accomodate to...Never again!

    • Dude. My dad has a pair of Mephistos. Ugliest freakin' shoes ever. But awesome for comfort. And that's what counts, isn't it?

Myself, I go for Birkenstocks. For exercise, whatever's 50% off when I go to the store. So there.

  • Nike.

They have by far the best commercials, which is obviously how I judge my purchases....
    • Nike.

I think I'd have to go for that option - mostly because I've never heard of half the other brands, and I did have a pair of Nikes I quite liked once...

    • They have by far the best commercials

If that's how I chose my profession, I'd be a freaking marine. (What?! What do you mean I don't get to fight fire breathing dragons?!)
    • I won't buy Nike precisely because of the commercials.

Besides their huge advertising budget is reflected in the grossly inflated prices one has to pay for their stuff.

What really turned me off to Nike shoes was working in a restaruant. I used to buy black walking or aerobic shoes to wear at work. I would only get 3-6 months out of the Nikes before they would disintigrate. The Rebooks and New Balances would last up to a year sometimes.

      Currently I've got a pair of Reebook cross-trainers I use when I need a

Nike has the best sweat shops, too. Everybody knows that good sweat shops makes great shoes.

I live close to the Nike campus in Portland. Everytime Nike does something the news picks it up exceptionally quickly as all the small-time DJs think if they get on Nike's case they'll get famous. They never do, but it is still entertaining to listen to.
  • I currently have a pair of Nikes for working on the house, etc. I have a pair of New Balance for running, etc. I usually have on dress shoes or sandles, however.
  • Red Wings or Carolina boots for motorcycle riding. Otherwise:

It's the Welsh blood. We're like Hobbits that way.
  • Well, they're not the best for playing basketball, but I like to kick around in them when at home or not in work attire.

    Comfy and retro 80's.
  • Do Doc Martens count? 'Cos I looooooove DMs.

That said, I just bought a bicycle a month ago, and needed to get something that'd stick to the pedals more. (I'm not nearly ready for clips.) I went for some nameless skateboard shoes at a consignment store that were a) cheap and b) grabbing the floor much better than my DMs (which were worn to a fine shine, since I wear 'em 'til they fall apart).

OT: As someone mentioned above, tennis shoes implies activity. But when I found myself hitting >220lbs , I

Get the clips, you'll thank yourself. The Shimano SPD pedals and plates aren't hard to get used to and they greatly improve your efficency when pedaling. For co
  • I don't do sports, but the shoes are Uber comfortable.

I generally do not wear sports shoes, so I have no opinion on this matter...
  • the canvas shoes in the multitude of colors.

And I apologize for lurking lately(this goes to all my friends/people who have friended me), just been insanely busy. Of course that's entirely my fault, but hey. I've been occupying myself for the last several months doing the jobs that used to be done by two people, not to mention working toward my BSCS at UNM.

Like Run-DMC said... it's all about my Adidas.
  • Mostly looking for that hot /. gossip, you know, sensationalism for Slashdot, shit that doesn't matter? But then I've never been much of a lurker for long. I *always* have something to say. I'm an opinionated, arrogant, self-absorbed, egotistical computer geek. What can I tell you? :)

Oh, and when wearing sneakers (I personally prefer to go around in my Birkenstocks, being a dirty hippy and all ;), I wear whatever I can get cheap. I have large, wide, flat feet and shoes wear out quicker on me due to thei
  • I wear:

Corcoran II field boots (Based off paratrooper boots) for day to day wear and paintball

Corcoran I (WWII to present parachutist boots) for formal and church

Vietnam-style knock off jungle boots for ruining tasks like concrete

Current-issue jungle boots for gardening and some paintballing, sometimes hiking, and usually bicycling
  • (What more can I say--I mean, how important can the leather-and-cotton-and-rubber shoe coverings be?)
    • Yeah, I don't get how people get excited over this topic. Shoes are totally commodity.

But then I get an erection over aluminum Coolermaster and Lian Li cases, and people look at me weird ("computer case? wtf, how commodity can you get?!").

I guess it takes all kinds to make a world. If shoes are somebody's bag, that's fine. I'll just smile and politely nod, while backing away slowly, showing no fear or disrespect.

    • Oops.

Forgot to add "no preference, I just wear what I pick up."

Dang, that sounds a lot more trollish than I wanted it to. Sorry Em!
    • Different brands fit differently, and some shoes last longer. There's a reason most people don't wear $5 shoes from Wal-Mart; they don't last long when you wear them every day, and they're not too comfortable. With some exceptions (basketball and some specialized shoes), I think you get what you pay for.

Other. New Balance. Try asking Nike sometime to make a 14 EEEE and see how they respond. Probably with 'our little worker's hands in Malaysia can't manipulate shoes that large fast enough to turn a profit'.

  • Whatever Chinese junk that Payless is selling for $15. Lasts me about 6-to-9 months and that's just fine with me, better value than "good" shoes that cost several times as much and only last twice as long.
  • I have three types of shoes. Work boots, loafers, and Tevas. I wear my boots when I must (work, mostly). I wear my loafers when I dress up. I wear my Tevas when I need shoes. I go barefoot when I don't.
  • All Stars, all the way. ...
waiting 20 seconds due lameness filter.
  • I find running and walking shoes very comfortable for daily use. Nikes are too narrow for me, Adidas are okay, but I finally settled on New Balance which fit very nicely and last a full year with daily use (well, probably longer but they get so dirty and worn on the outside that I get a new pair).
  • Diadora indoor soccer shoes. I've owned several pair over the past 8 years. They wear out within a year, but they are uber-light -- as an above poster noted, it's like you're wearing thick socks; and, they breathe really well. Although I'm much like a girl in that I have to have several different kinds of shoes. I have Nikes, adidas, doc martens, nunn bush, san marina, florsheims (the absolute most comfortable shoes in the world) among others. It's funny, I actually buy most of my shoes off of ebay, th
  • Yep,

I guess I'm lurker (is that a bad thing), in that I mostly read your polls and peoples comments when I get time, but generally don't have time to post to slashdot anyway.... So today, I'm posting and not lurking :)

Poll Option: H -- Doc Martins are the best shoes in the world for mountain climbing, trekking, travelling, business presentations, swimming and tennis ;)

Well, at least *I* wear docs in all these situations.....
