Journal Em Emalb's Journal: Things on my mind recently 6

Lucky you, two JE's in one day.

Anyhow.

Item #1 on the agenda is Omnivore vs Vegetarian. I have such a hard time figuring this one out. To me, this debate is similar to the religion/athiest debate. Why, oh why, do people make such a big deal out of what other people eat? Take me for example. I eat meat, vegetables, fruits, breads, you name it. If it can be eaten and tastes good, I'll eat it. Now, Jen, on the other hand, has a huge aversion to fat. So, she doesn't eat meat often, rarely ever in fact, unless I remove all traces of fat from the meat *before* I cook it. This kinda astounds me, since the fat is what helps give the meat it's flavor, but she insists, so I do. Now, I remove the fat from my meat after I cook it, since I am not a fan of it either. But, she won't have it that way. Moral of the story? I accept her requets and deal with it. Now, I know the above is not a traditional example of vegetarian vs omnivore, but why the heck can't vegetarians and omnivores get along? Who gives a flying gopher fart what you eat? I guess I am saying people need to butt the hell out of other people's business.

The weird thing is, most people I know don't give a damn one way or another. So, all these people that vegetarians say are giving them a hard time, are they the zealots of meat? Is it (again) a case of the uneducated few giving vegetarians a hard time over this? Or is it more a case of a few touchy vegetarians getting super-agitated over nothing? You make the call.

Item #2 on my list is how painfully hard it is to sit at work on a slow day without streaming the Bears-Saints game, or hearing anything about it. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but I am recording it at home and want to watch it without knowing what occurs. However, when you are at work for 12 hours at a time with basically not much to do, it's tough. As an aside, I am not allowed (for some dense reason) to study while I am here at work. Ah well.

Does anyone have a list of interesting sites that are work friendly I can lose a couple hours to? I tend to post like crazy on slashdot when work is slow and I am bored. If you could list a few, I'd appreciate it.

  • I wonder if the reason that we hear about vegetarianism is that it requires quite a life choice to give up all the tasty tasty meat. Perhaps a small percentage of the people who make such a choice feel the need to share it with the world (like people everywhere do with relegion, sport, amway :)
    • I think that you and I see this in the same way. However, we probably deal with it differently. I personally encourage people to tell others about the "wonderful" choices that they made, and why we must all follow along.

There's a time to discuss things and a time to stop. Hopefully, they don't get carried away.

Maybe people tell others what to do often times, because they care, and they don't know any other ways of doing it. It's not as if our societies are so rich in ways of dealing with people. Our language is the language of business. As a result, we often step on each other's toes.

On a slightly unrelated topic, I hope that the vegetarians make more varieties of foods. It would make it easier to become one. My favourite health food is roasted soy beans. I don't think that they taste healthy at all.

All of the above is just my opiniion.

Em Emalb, maybe you should try those tofu things that taste like meat. My friend is a pretty fussy eater, and he likes them. Without fat on them, it might make meal preps easier for you and the lady.
  • First, I, like you, enjoy any and all food. Every ethnicity, even exotic. I love all types of food. My wife? English heritage. She eats english food, american food (no fish!), and "plain" italian (like spaghetti, but nothing exotic). I finally got her to try some mexican food, and she likes it. I've spent the 6 years we've been together breaking her down to trying new foods. Its a long drawn-out process, but I hope that we'll be able to have anchovie pasta by the time Joey is old enough to eat it. My rule : You can not like it, but you HAVE to try it.

Anyway, on topic, I can see why vegatarians give meat eaters a hard time. But meat eaters giving a vegatarian a hard time is simply zeal. And no-fat diets don't work. Fat is what makes your stomach feel "full" faster. Now reduced fat isn't a bad idea, but cutting it completely out is silly. You'll just eat more that way.

And time wasters are easy. For example, have you ever read Sluggy Freelance [sluggy.com]?? Its a daily comic that's been on for serveral years. Start at the beginning and work your way through to present. It is WELL WORTH IT. It filled the void that Calvin and Hobbes left.
