Journal Em Emalb's Journal: What's the best fast food restaurant? 80

Answers of "they all suck" are unacceptable. There are places (such as In-n-Out burger, Chick-fil-a, etc) that are non-sucky and/or good for you.

Therefore, answer the fucking question. If you still feel the need to say "they all suck", I will be forced to respond with, "au contraire, my friend, it is indeed YOU who suck ginormous rhino pecker."

Sup entireweb? How you doin this morning/afternoon/evening?

Me? I'm here. Having an ok day so far. Nothing too out of the ordinary going on, so life seems ok.

What's the best fast food restaurant?

Comments Filter:
  • The best fast food restaurants are the most expensive ones........

    • What do you mean?

      Got any examples?

      Why is the earth flat?

If I have 12 rocks, one of which weighs differently than the rest, how can you tell which one it is using a scale only 3 times?
      • The aforementioned Chick-Fil-A (sp), Arby's (most of their 'value meals' are $5+), Culvers, Fazoli's. To name a few......

        • au contraire, my friend, the Pho shops and Vietnamese delis are quite cheap.

A big bowl of Pho is $4, a bbq pork sandwitch is $1.50, an eggroll is $0.50, and a lunch special with 2 entrees and rice is $3.
  • Best. Burgers. Ever.

1/3 pound angus beef patties, mustard, chopped lettuce, 3 tomato slices instead of 2 like everywhere else, diced onions, pickles (ok I order them without pickles), and shoestring fries. Whataburger rules.

I almost said Chic-Fil-A, since their grilled chicken sandwiches are quite good - but I eat there too often (cause it's healthy) so I'm a little sick of them.

IMHO, the sub places, Subway and Quizno's, particularly, have the best real, healthy food among "fast food" (as opposed to "family") chains.

The most underrated source of good, cheap fast food is Taco Bell. The stuff straight off the menu is awful for you, but people don't realize you can customize your order. Get salsa fresca instead of cheese and sour cream, grilled chicken instead of ground beef, and you have a tasty healthy meal for $1.39.

Most overrated -- hands down, In'n'Out. I just don't get why peop

    • Screw Taco Hell. Do yourself a favor and find a taco stand or taco truck. If none of the customers or staff seem to speak English you are in the right place. Cheap, healthy, and good food.

The pho shops and Vietnamese delis I mentioned elsewhere are another good choice. After trying bahn mi I've lost my taste for Subway and Quizno's.

BBQ joints also often have cheap sandwitches they can serve quickly. Not the healthiest thing in the world, but mmmm.... oh so good.
    • Try Q'doba's or La Bamba's (both are chains centered mostly in the atlantic states). La Bamba's is characterized by their ad slogan "Burritos as big as your head" (and they aren't kidding). I've been to 3 and all three were staffed by mexican immigrants who couldn't speak english. They employed local college students to run the register and translate. They're set up like SubWay where you go down the line, pick your tortilla, meat, toppings, etc and watch it maed and grilled in front of you.

      Q'doba is sim
      • DAMN YOU for mentioning La Bambas. Q'Doba is just not the same, and my burrito-based life has been an empty wasteland since hte state college La Bamba's closed.
        • I know. I *ADORED* their hot sauce (the stuff that came in the little 2oz container for the HUGE HONKIN' BURRITO and was STILL way more than you needed.

The rice water was addictingly good (though, to find out, I had to try it on a drunkin dare walking back from John Henry's (what is now Hooters).

      • I've never seen either of those, not spending much time in that region. The California equivalent would probably be Green Burrito.

Here in Boston, it's very difficult to get decent Central American food outside of heavily Latino neighborhoods. People swoon over the barely-edible Anna's Taqueria burritos like it's El Tepeyac [aol.com] in East LA.

  • By frequency of visits, it would have to be Taco Bell for me. Bodak and I stop there quite a bit on the way home from hockey games during the season, and if we can't decide where to go if we are out, we typically end up there since it has wide variety of tasty creations for low prices.

Of course, we have to stray from Taco Bell and get some real mexican food around here on occasion. Hmmmm....that's good stuff.
  • I'd have to go with Taco Bell, but if it's available, Chick-fil-A. Those are pretty rare here in Wisconsinland and are only found in food courts.
  • There's a chain in NE OH called Swenson's. It's an old style drive-up/sit-in-your-car thing where they have this burger called the Galley Boy and it is the best thing. Two patties, two special sauces, melted cheese, those old style burger buns that are crispy on the edges and a green olive stuck on a toothpick on the top. They also have 22 shake flavors, phosphate. Heck, you can even get steak there if you wanted it (though I don't know if you'd want to). They do a lot of things but several things very
  • I don't eat fast food anymore, but I always liked Taco Bueno. Taco Bell sucks. Taco Bueno rules! Get some MexiDips & Chips and a Chicken Muchaco, and you'll know what I'm talking about. :-)

    • Taco Bell is mah favorito senorita! Genuine (Phonetically: GEN-YUU-AYN) Mexican food always beats that Taco Bueno phony crap.

How do I know this, never having even seen a Taco Bueno? Like everything else, I just know. ;)

Aw, hell, Taco Bell ain't that bad. Really.
  • Totally fast food (owned (and PWND) by McDonalds) and totally good. AND THEY SERVE CERVEZAS!

I think I win, so mod me up.
    • AND THEY SERVE CERVEZAS!

Not around here...the one across from UNLV has a "Blame it on The Man (no liquor license)" sign over that part of the menu board, and the others just have a big empty space on the board where the beer would go.

Is it just Budmilloors swill, or is it real beer?

      • It depends. Do you consider Negra Modelo to be swill? Or Heinie to be swill? Or Corona? There are many that do. There are also people that drink coffee from beans that have been shat out by malaysian lemurs. It takes all kinds, man. They also have margaritas, too.

That being said, the beer isn't for carry out, and I'm always carrying out. But I feel good about a quick-food place that has beer. Its just right.
        • It depends. Do you consider Negra Modelo to be swill? Or Heinie to be swill? Or Corona?

None of those fall into the "Budmilloors swill" category. (Negra Modelo is actually supposed to be a decent example of Vienna lager (a style that has faded out somewhere in its country of origin), but I've not had it before.)

That being said, the beer isn't for carry out, and I'm always carrying out. But I feel good about a quick-food place that has beer. Its just right.

          Indeed. :-)

Mark me down as politically incorrect, but I'm going for McDonalds. Yep, a Big Mac or Big Tasty is where it's at when you want fast food.

A couple of decades ago, I was in California and I remember liking an Ultimate Cheeseburger from Jack-In-The-Box, but I have no idea if a) they still exist, and b) I'd still like them. I quite like KFC, too, but I think they have to qualify as "slow food".

    • A couple years ago I was on a business trip that had me driving across Denmark to visit a distribution center we have over there. It was a four-hour drive (from another site in Sweden), and after getting lost for a while I made it to our DC in Kolding well past noon. The DC manager welcomed me and grabbed me a sandwich from their cafeteria so I could have something to eat during our meeting, before I turned back around and drove another 4 hours back to Lund.

I get the sandwich, take a peek under the bun, a

They are still around. I'm not sure what states they are in but there are quite a few in the Seattle area. Of the larger burger chains, they, Wendy's, and Dairy Queen are probably my favorites. I go to Jack in the Box more often as Wendy's and Dairy Queens are somewhat rare around here.

      I can't stand McDonald's food at all so I
    • Oh yeah. They still exist. [jackinthebox.com] It seems to be a largely western [jackinthebox.com] thing, but there are some locations in the Tenn / N & S Carolina area. There are 4 or so in Boise. Dang good food and it isn't made until you order it (TM) so nothing is just nuked and nothing has been sitting out on a warming pad. They also have this sit down store that is nicer called "JBX Grill [jbxgrill.com]" but with better food that is brought out to you and.... yes.... they serve beer and wine! There are 4 of the JBX Grills in town as well. This
    • I occasionally go for McDonalds as "the best", but really it's only when they have the funds to be trying something new. (McRibs, McPizza, Triple Cheesburger--all of my favorite McFood that I can't get anymore...)

I will, forevermore, smack anyone who mentions "Super Size Me". If you ate three heavy-dinner meals a day -- some 3000 calories -- of ANYTHING, McDonalds or Lean Cuisine, your body will shut down. Moron

Over here, I'd go with a Big Mac or a Whopper - not a patch on Jack-in-the-Box or Fuddruckers, but still pretty good. I don't like the Big Tasty though - I'm not sure what, but there's just something about it that doesn't taste right to me. Probably the sauce?

      • I don't like the Big Tasty though - I'm not sure what, but there's just something about it that doesn't taste right to me. Probably the sauce?

For me it's the tomato. But lift the bun, throw away the tomato, and continue as if it was never there and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Big and tasty. Mmmmm...

  • Best damn biscuts evar.
    • Mmmm... For really, really bad-for-you fast food, Popeyes is REALLY fucking good. Heavily breaded fried chicken (with just the right crisp to it), lovely battered, seasoned fries, and yup -- those biscuits are da bomb.

But I try to go for places that are "healthier" fast food. Em nailed 'em -- In'n'Out is probably the best you can do for burgers (but nonexistent in Georgia, sadly). Chick-Fil-A is where I treat Kiddo most often (maybe once a month or less). They're good because you can get grilled & who
      • When I was a kid, my family got fast food only rarely as well, and usually in the form of pizza maybe once a month. Burger places or KFC were only a few times a year, really.

        I'm grateful for that.

Glad to hear someone else is doing the same thing in this day and age. Wish all the other parents could as responsible.

I saw one kid in the MARTA station a few weeks ago who couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 years old, and he was so fat he could barely manage to waddle down the stairs. It was so sad, and it re
        • Yup. Little fat kids are incredibly sad, because you know it's *entirely* the parents' doing. They've crippled their kids, deprived them of the possibility of ever really knowing good eating habits.

          ....Bethanie....
      • I've heard of In'n'Out and Chick-Fil-A, but living in Washington we have none of that.

McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Jack In The Box, Dairy Queen, Arby's and one Popeye's in the area (haven't been there yet).

I keep seeing ads for Sonic, but they aren't in the area. :( I'd like to try them sometime.
    • Yeah, Wendy's is good, too.

  • I could eat whoppers all freeeeaking day long. My wife hates it, so I rarely go there... maybe that's why I long for it...
    • I could eat whoppers all freeeeaking day long.

Yeah yeah yeah -- we know you like the "forbidden fruit" of the "Whopper," FK. Your wife doesn't like it, you say? That's a pity.

Just don't spend too much time lookin' for your "fast food" fix on the wrong side of the tracks, no matter how deep your yearning is -- you got a family to take care of now!

      ....Bethanie....
  • In my home town, we have, BK, McD, KFC, and Wendy's. Ad Subway and (Gas Station) Blimpie if you include subs as fast food. Of those, Wendy's is the best around here. If I drive 30 minutes, I can add a Taco Bell/Long John Silver's combo place to that list. I'd still pick Wendy's. TB/LJS if I'm not in the mood for a burger. When I was in Rochester I avoided fast food and ate sandwich/sub combos from Panera, or Chinese from a buffet place.
  • I need to check out one of those Cluck N' Bells I keep seeing all over San Andreas.
  • Chick-Fil-A.

But when I lived in Las Vegas, Chick-Fil-A's were rarer than hens' teeth. And there was a fast-food hotdog place, Weinershnitzel(sp?). The chili-cheese fries were awesome.
  • by turg ( 19864 ) *
Lick's [lickshomeburgers.com]. People actually go there and buy the raw burger patties to take home for the barbeque/grill.

In addition, they are the best place for ice cream.

Vegetarians tell me that their veggie burgers are the best around.

Also, they seek to give the best experience (and most responsibility) to teenage employees of any employer of teenagers.
  • Best fast-food burger I've ever had. Period.

  • It really actually depends mostly on the management. I like Burger King, love Chipotle (eat there very regularly), like some Wendy's, like some Arby's. But I've eaten in each of these when poorly managed and they all sucked.
    • Too true.

Many of the chains vary widely from store to store in both service and food quality depending on the management.
    • Do you have the "it's all falling apart" radar? I can usually walk into a place and tell within about 10 seconds if I should just turn around and leave. I've had the eternal wait for my "fast" food one too many times. If I wanted to wait I'd go to a real restaurant.
  • ...and vote for Long John Silver's in the late 1970s.

If you insist on me staying in this timeline, then I shall vote for Taco Bell, who are criminally absent from Germany. Bastards.

I also happen to love KFC, but sadly it doesn't love me. Chicken fat makes me kinda ill. I used to love Arby's, but the last couple of times I visited one it was rather disappointing...

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

  • it's a regional chain out here in the southwest. they recently were renamed to flavios

there a lots of them all over, and combined, they get a ton of health violations. i don't care, it's sooo good

sunday morning i stopped by one (there is one about a 3 minute walk from my house and another that's about 15 minutes) to pick up a chorizo and egg burrito. got a pint of orange juice at the convenience store and i was set. good eats my man, good eats
    • The best place for good burros are the ones that look the dodgiest. There used to be an awesome place on priest called Tacos Mexico that was incredible. Even after I stopped working in Tempe- I would still drive out there to eat every so often. Not there anymore now.

Any of the 'ertos' are usually pretty good.

On another local note, the breakfast burritos at Burger Factory (7th Ave and Osborne) are killer.
      • Yea ... you've got to go with the taco stands/trucks that look like they have a million health code violations they always have the best food.

Oddly enough the only taco truck I ever got sick at was a spotless clean one that appeared to be following the health code to the letter.
        • When I was big on Tacos Mexico I had a co-worker who refused to eat there. She muched preferred a much 'nicer' place.

Another co-worker did some scrounging on the web and the nice place had much lower scores on inspections than the little family place.
    • Pepe's!!! The best part is that it's part fast food Mexican part tire shop. What else could you ask for? Oh...and get back to work.
      • julios 2 too. mmm. hmm, julios 2 or restaurant mexico. hmm, tough choice lol

btw, next time u come up, would u mind bringing me some eegees? k, fanks
        • Pollo chico!!! Now I'm hungry. Not restaurant mexico, it's not fast or yummy. Eegees is good too...it's close enough to lunchtime. Not for you though, you need to work through lunch to make up for the slacking you'll do later. BBQ and transmission shop, hehe, that's good.
      • That reminds me of a place here. Part BBQ joint (with the hottest hotsauce Evar), part transmission shop.
  • Kalamazoo, MI. Only open in the summer. Make sure and get onion rings with your burger. Fabulous.

If you are in Chicago-- I highly recommend G's. It's right around Chicago and LaSalle-- you can see it from that intersection, it's a couple streets over. Sort of by Cosmos. Can't go wrong with a number one.

In Phoenix, AZ I highly recommend Gee Gees on Central (Central just south of Osborne). The gyros are good. My favorite is the cheese-burger with hot peppers. My mouth is watering ju
    • A few that I can think of in Seattle would be Spud's off of Alki beach and By's [nwsource.com].

In Kent: Ghorm's Drive In has a mean milkshake and will malt it if you so choose. They have a real banana milkshake that will rock you to the core.

Cave Man Kitchens [restaurants.com] has some of the best BBQ in the freakin' state.
      • A few that I can think of in Seattle would be Spud's off of Alki beach and By's.

Jack's Fish Spot in the market kick's Spud's butt and you can't go wrong with the original Ivar's Fish Bar at Pier 54.

For burgers Red Mill's are the best I've ever had and their onion rings are to die for.

And how could you not mention either Dick's or Burgermaster?

  • we've got a place down on OSU campus called bento go-go that serves asian fast food, like sushi and tempora. it's pretty good. occasionally it's slow for fast food, but not too bad.

my favorite national chain is chipotle.

my favorite national burger chain is wendy's.
    • my favorite national burger chain is wendy's.

      Hah! Typical Ohio bigotry.

Though I, errr, like Wendy's, too.

Hey, I even been to that there original Wendy's in Columbus for the guided tour.

Did I just admit that in public?

      Cheers,

    • O! H! I! O! Go Buckeyes!

You know, since so many people are listing off non-chain fast food places, I should throw out Mello Cream on Navarre Ave. in Toldeo. Haven't been back there in years - great burgers, and easily the best ice cream ever.

  • Malts to die for!

  • Definitely Chipolte.

As an alternative, Quiznos is good, and also the greasy spoon burger joint near my other house, which serves the best fries and burgers at the best price of any place I have seen. (I cannot remember its name, though.)
  • White castle. gimme a sack of sliders anyday ;)

actually i don't like white castle that much, the best place to get a burger in fargo is 'burger time' the burgers come soaking in there own juices mmmm and the fries taste so damn good, sometimes i eat em w/out ketchup.
