Journal Em Emalb's Journal: Poll 53

If you had to give up one thing for life, what would it be:

1) Beer

2) carbonated caffeinated beverages (aka coke/soda/pop)

For some it's obvious. For others, not so obvious.

Vote your conscience, people!

  • Every once in a while, I take a sip of somebody's beer just to see if I still hate it. Yup.
    • American beer doesn't count; in fact it shouldn't even be called beer. Have you tried other beers besides the American swill that pretends to be beer?

That said, I could probably give either one up without much problem.

      • "Oh look, Seymore, it's one of those beer snobs."

Come on man, there are some really really good American beers out there.

Just like there are some nasty as shit German beers out there.

        • really good American beers out there
          yeah, like A&W. :P

Actually, local breweries tend to be good, but if you even mention Sam Adams, I'll puke. Sam Adams tastes like I'm licking a rusty metal post every time I drink that piss. I hate it and all Sam Adams employees by association.

but it has to be tapped properly and at the right temp, otherwise it'll suffer.
        • But they aren't stocked at the local grocery store (damn them and their poor taste) and they don't have ads on the TV, so the US gets a bad rap for crappy beer :-( Ask anyone outside the US to name an American beer, and they will probably say something like Budweiser or Miller. Hell I even like Corona (with a lime :-) ) better than that crap. By God please by all means let me know of a decent American beer that I can actually buy in a store (even a liquor store) without having to travel to Posquegge Idaho t
          • The Lager, the Porter and the Premium are all pretty damn good. It's the definitive East PA beer but you can find it pretty much anywhere and for cheap. Is it close to my favorite? No but I'd put it up against any other macrobrew, international or domestic. It's as good as any who don't spend 20 billion a year on advertising.
            • - It's the oldest brewery in north america (it made it through prohibition by disguising itself as a bowling alley)
              - It's located in Pottstown, PA ('bout an hour northwest of philly)
              - It's one of the few amber lagers brewed in the country (there are NO macro-brew amber lagers that I can think of. Many golden lagers, but no amber)
              - It's a dark beer that isn't heavy (the lager)

I myself don't care for lite beers (i can piss better tasting stuff), Heffeweizens (they all taste the same), or thick da
          • Well I don't know how it is out in the proverbial "Middle America" but in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho most supermarkets seem to carry at least some microbrews or imports as do most of the bars.

Many micros have national distribution via Anhauser-Busch, SAB Miller, or MolsonCoors nowdays which means you should be able to find them almost anywhere now. Not to mention that the macros have some decent imitation micros nowdays (especially a couple of the MolsonCoors products)

            Stuff to look for/try:

      • I've never tried American beer.
        • Perhaps that is the problem. Maybe what you need to do is order a glass of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Or you could always go with the local brew: Grain Belt
          • No, the "problem" is that all beers taste like beer. Cheap, expenive, dark, light, they all have that unique beer taste and smell that I can't stand.
            • So do you like any of the following
              Bread? (esp. yeasty breads)
              Wine?
              Whisky?

Of course if beer didn't taste like beer then it wouldn't be beer would it?

That said some Belgian Lambics, Tappist Ales, and some Barleywines have a very unbeer like taste you might like (esp. the lambics). The lambic beers are almost more like a fruit flavored champange.

Guinness might be worth a sample as well. (just a guess that it might lack the flavor or odor notes you don't like)
              • I like breads that do not taste like yeast. I cannot stand the smell of yeast- it has to be one of the most awful aromas ever. I hate whisky. I only like sweet wines.

                I hate Guiness.
                • Lets see, you hate yeast, maltiness, and likely bitter flavors. Yep ... not much chance of you liking beer any time soon.

Still you might want to try a sip of a Belgian lambic if you ever have a chance. Very sweet and fruity and almost but not completely unlike beer.
              • I like yeasty breads very much. I like wines that aren't bitter. The best alcoholic drinks I've had didn't smell or taste much like alcohol, like Mike's Hard Lemondade. I've had a beer or two that was almost good tasting, but when I stopped swallowing the aftertaste ruined it. Near as I can tell I don't like bitter-tasting food or drinks. I fail to understand why anyone would. Bitter tastes bad, like "this shit is poisonous so don't ingest it." Of course as a kid I didn't like sour stuff either, and

                  • Thanks for the tips!
                    • Oh and a good bartender will usually be more than willing to help you find something you like.

Pick a place with a good beer selection or a good brewpub. Many brewpubs will offer sample glasses of several of their beers for only slightly more than the equivalent amount in a single glass.
      • American beer doesn't count; in fact it shouldn't even be called beer. Have you tried other beers besides the American swill that pretends to be beer?

Yes. Please tell these foreign brewers to stop sending their crappy beer to my country. We have quite enough cheap crappy beer here, as well as an ample selection of genuinely good beer.

For the refernece, though, I must say beer. No one ever died from their coffee habit.
    • heh it smells/tastes so bad I can't even try a sip.

been off carbonated bevs for 7 months now...
stick'n with juice/water and a latte ever once in a while.

But oh...Jamba Juice is my newest addiction =)
  • Already gave up the soda last year. Even before I started up on South Beach last August, I lost 12 pounds in a month just by giving up the sodas. I haven't touched that stuff since.

    • by Otter ( 3800 )
Oh, you mean the South Beach Diet, right?!? I was wondering how the hell a switch to SoBe [sobebev.com] could possibly result in weight loss!!!

As for me, my blood is maybe 15% Diet Coke and 15% tea. Deciding between those would be tough; giving up beer would be trivial.

  • Hmmm. See we're polling now, are we? Finally got your sorry ass moving!!! ;)

    b) I'd probably give up pop first so i could have me guinness. But I wouldn't mind giving up beer cuz there's always whiskey and vodka martinis. :D

That said, I don't have much of either anyway. Oooh, I do like a nice root beer float from time to time, but Guinness still trumps that.

    Clear now?
  • 2. as long as I could get my caffeine from coffee or tea
  • by slothdog ( 3329 ) *
    Never had beer.

Gave up caffeine ~4 years ago and soda ~3 years ago. Still have an occasional home-brewed root beer, though.

    I'm so boring.
  • I drink cola more. I drink it at work, for lunch, because it tastes good and I hate hot beverages (this is why I only drink iced coffee in the mornings). But I have given it up numerous times.

Meanwhile beer is the social lubricant up there with sports and the weather. It's the great includer. You can "* over a beer" almost anything. The most staid uncomfortable heirarchical relations can be broken down by the simple act of rotating buying of rounds. Comfort for everyone with comfort for the soul. I
  • Both -- no sweat.

    Hate beer, don't drink caffeine.

    Done.

    ....Bethanie....
  • Don't drink anymore.

But wouldn't have too much trouble with 2. I gave up caffeine during lent and occasionally get a sprite if I'm out to dinner.
  • Except I can't give them up: I don't drink them as they're much too sweet for my taste.

I'm glad that you didn't give a choice of beer of coffee. That would have been hard!

  • I can easily give up beer since I don't drink it that much anyway. Just don't ask me to give up Vodka. ;-)

Also, I typically only drink diet decaffienated sodas, so there's no issue giving up sodas with caffiene. And I NEVER drink soda with sugar...NEVER. That stuff makes my stomach hurt.

    • so I take it you never have had a vodka and coke.

Also known as a KoKa Cola ;) (at least by me, normal people just call it vodka & coke)

(note: I don't drink, because um I don't want to be hopelessly addicted to it... I'm not against other people drinking, unless they plan on operating a motor vehicle, or shop on e-bay (unless i'm selling stupid stuff like empty boxes when they are))

  • I would rather DIE than live without either.
  • *kicks you*

No beer, no caffeine, rarely i can have a carbonated NONcaffeinated thing, but not often (the bubbles can make me faint.)

    *kicks you again*

    I vote, "Q."

    For "Quick, Henry, the Flit!"

I'll have a double decaf iced something with no bubbles and no alcohol. And a straw.

    Hey- that's water!

Damn. And people wonder why i hang out with blinder?

*Throws water on y'all and stomps away*
  • beer gets me laid. you think i'm going to give that up?
  • beer - haven't had one since I gave up gluten .

soda - gave that up years ago.

My one treat is Virgil's Rootbeer - in a class by itself and The Best tasting drink to date. One I am willing to give up.

  • As you advise, I vote to give up my conscience instead of the listed options.

    soda
  • by Tet ( 2721 )
Easy choice. I drink little other than water and fruit juice these days, so I could give up either with ease. But if I'm out at a fast food place, I might have an occasional Tango, so I'll say beer here.
  • I could give up beer, but I gave up sodas a while ago because they are so bad for you. Beer on the other hand, I like.
  • by red5 ( 51324 )
I usually prefer iced-tea over coke/sprite in the drive-thru and we all know I'm a drinker by now.
  • I don't drink either. What do I win? :P
  • I don't like the taste of any alcoholic beverage, and I don't like strong carbonation. The only soda I drink is Cricket Cola [cricketcola.com] and that is only when I visit my brother in Seattle. However, I seem to be addicted to the bottled Starbucks mochas.
  • i've already forsaken beer and all other alcoholic beverages. i don't even drink that much soda. depends on the rules. if beer counts, that's my choice. if not, there's only one choice left.
  • by ces ( 119879 ) *
I don't drink much of the stuff anyway and try to get either ones that still use real sugar or splenda when I do (I can't stand the taste of NutraSweet and HFCS does whacked things to my blood sugar).

My caffine delivery system of choice is coffee.

Oh and I likes me booze. Beer, wine, liquor its all good.

At this point in my life I doubt I will give up either caffine or alcohol unless it is medically necessary to do so. (those of you who have to forgo either for medical reasons have my sympathies)
  • This one is easy: I can do well without caffeinated carbonated drinks, I hardly drink much of them as it is; cutting out completely would be no big loss.

Long as I can get whatever caffeine I want from coffee or tea.
