Submission + - Faster Android Updates with "Project Treble" (arstechnica.com)

Thelasko writes:

Ahead of Google I/O, Google has just dropped a bombshell of a blog post that promises, for real this time, that it is finally doing something about Android's update problems. "Project Treble" is a plan to modularize the Android OS, separating the OS framework code from "vendor specific" hardware code. In theory, this change would allow for a new Android update to be flashed on a device without any involvement from the silicon vendor. Google calls it "the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of Android to date," and it's already live on the Google Pixel's Android O Developer Preview.

You should look into adding the Firefox Stable PPA. It currently has Firefox 7.0.1. With Firefox 8 having just been released, I would say this is pretty up to date, especially for Ubuntu LTS. If you want to get brave, you can even add the Firefox Beta PPA.

In my experience, about 18 months into the LTS cycle, it starts to become a pain using up to date programs. Being able to update a few key apps takes away the temptation to go for the regular (6 month) releases. Other options to stay up to date while only relying on Ubuntu packages include using Ubuntu Backports and Prevu.

Dear Troll,

I run multiple operating systems, including Linux and Windows. I've seen games (all types; not just FPSs) that have a high wow-factor at first. After playing them for a little while I realize they don't bring anything new to the table.

Often times, it seems as if the game developers just used a new engine for the same old game. But at least they have people like you who fall for those tactics, right?

Thieves Take the Cake 91

Two very hungry German couriers ate a fruit cake destined for a German newspaper and in its place mailed a box of credit card data. The data including names, addresses and card transactions ended up at the Frankfurter Rundschau daily. The mix-up triggered an alarm, and police advised credit card customers with Landesbank Berlin to check their accounts for inconsistencies. Fruitcake must be different in Germany for people to want to use it as something other than a paperweight.
