Very ironic, someone using prefixes for convenient calculation between different types of base units taking about "metric weanies."

The distance a signal travels in a clock cycle only limits you if you insist on having a global clock that is synchronized to less than one cycle. Asynchronous circuits aren't super common in CPUs yet but they do exist, they're reasonably widespread in signal processing chips, and ubiquitous in inter-IC communications.

Yeah, if you're going down that road then you can say it about anything. Your brakes were approved based on some test samples, that might not apply to your specific brakes. Better not drive at all.

A more rational objection is that the eye safety standards were not necessarily formulated for, e.g. someone driving in traffic staring into a bunch of LIDARs for hours.

Submission + - KU Leuven researchers develop method to permanently disable HIV virus (belganewsagency.eu)

nrosier writes: Researchers at KU Leuven have developed a method to render HIV viruses permanently harmless. The research was published on Thursday in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

Currently, 600,000 people worldwide still die from HIV infection every year. However, thanks to antiretroviral drugs, patients' quality of life has improved significantly and the number of new infections has fallen dramatically. However, as the medication only suppresses the virus, patients must take it for life.

Researchers at KU Leuven have now discovered a way to disable the virus completely in cells in a laboratory environment. Professor of molecular medicine Zeger Debyser describes this as a "scientific breakthrough". "Much clinical research is still needed before a new treatment can be developed, but this is already a big step forward."

Why focus on shootings than total murder rate? It would seem to me that people are just as dead if shot by a gun, stabbed by a knife, run over by a vehicle, struck with a bat, or beaten with bare fists.

Well, you started sensibly.

From data collected on intentional homicide rates the USA is as safe as Greenland: https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F... [wikipedia.org]

And then took a weird turn. Why not just do what you suggested and compare the US to Europe? US intentional homicide rate: 5.763 / 100k. Europe: 2.10. EU: ~0.32.

Goggles made this way would still have some significant advantages, namely no power requirements and probably a smaller, lighter package.

Unlikely. CCD's sensitivity is down in the individual photon range. Thermodynamics says you can't upconvert fewer than two photons without a power source and various other physical limits mean any type of medium is going to be way, way worse than that. Passively detecting near IR is kind of useless too, so the only way you're using goggles made this way is if you've got a very much powered searchlight too.
