Journal DisownedSky's Journal: 39 percent believe in YEC? WTF? 5

If this new Gallup poll is even close to being right, then it serves as prima facie evidence for the failure of American science education. 39% said they believed that Young Earth Creationism is "definitely true." 25% said it was "Probably True." That's shocking. The claims of creationism fail every test, and are frankly absurd on their face. That includes OEC and ID as well, but YEC is particularly silly,

Frankly, were I a theist, I would consider it blasphemy to believe in a god as small and petty as a literal interpretation of Genesis gives us.

39 percent believe in YEC? WTF?

  • I keep telling my cousin stuff like that.

I also tell her that a deity who tells a 13.7-billion-year story with the universe, and then says the whole thing is one two-millionth as long and mostly happens around one little cold rock in an ordinary spiral galaxie's arm (and contradicts most of the details), is a liar. So pathological, AAMOF, that said deity would have to be the Prince of Lies.

This hasn't changed her tune yet.
  • This came to me a few weeks ago and is one of those questions which will trip up anyone who believes the Earth is only 6 - 10,000 years old. In fact, the question relies on their own smugness and lack of understanding about science and how it works.

The key to this question is to lay the groundwork early on with one simple question: how old is the Earth? At this point you can't let the creationist wiggle out by trying to use flim-flam science. Pin them down to an exact number. 6,000 years, 10,000 years,
  • I guess this shows 39% of Americans are brainwashed. They might otherwise be normal, intelligent people but when it comes to certain matters they are simply incapable of thinking for themselves. It doesn't matter what evidence you present, they will simply reject it because of garbage put in their heads during formative years. It's sad, really.

  • We learned we ought not to take the figures in Genesis as they are, some include exaggeration like the earth was created in 'one' day or Methusela lived up to nearly '1000' years old. We need to interpret them as one day is equal to one billion year for example and 1000 years old was 100 years old, etc.

In the same manner it's just fine for us all to interpret young earth creationist's claim like the Earth was created 10000 years ago as one year is equal to 457 thousand years. Then mathematically their cl

    • But that is not at all the claim they make, and furthermore, it doesn't scale. Create a to-scale timeline of life on Earth and you'll see what I mean. 200 million years of dinosaurs, and 200,000 years of Homo Sap., for example. What's more Genesis leaves out evolution. We now know that the dinosaurs arrived about 255 million years ago and departed rather abruptly about 64 million years ago. They came and went before anything like today's animals appeared.
