Quad core processors will primarily provide better battery life. Most designs will feature cores of mixed processing power allowing most of the chip to be fully powered down when idle or just doing baseband event handling.

When there is real work required firing up the rest of the chip will allow for tasks to be completed very quickly. Once complete the processor can again be ramped back down to a low power state.

mliu writes: In what is sure to be a blow to the already beleaguered stand alone GPS market, Nokia, the global leader in smartphone market share, has released a fully offline-enabled free GPS navigation and mapping application for its Symbian smartphones. Furthermore, the application also includes Lonely Planet and Michelin guides. Unfortunately, the N900, which is beloved by geeks for its Maemo Linux-based operating system, has not seen any of the navigation love so far. With Google's release of Google Navigation for Android smartphones, and now Nokia doing one better and releasing an offline-enabled navigation application, hopefully this is the start of a trend where this becomes an expected component of any smartphone.

AVee writes: "Engadget (amonst many others) report that Nokia is sueing Apple because the iPhone infringes on 10 Nokia patents related to GSM, UTMS and WiFi. The press release doesn't contain much detail, it does state that Apple didn't agree "appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property", which sounds like there have been negotiations about those patents."

Aequo writes: Qt, the highly polished, well documented, modern GUI toolkit owned by Nokia will be available under the LGPL starting with version 4.5! It was previously only mainly available under the GPL and a commercial license. Selling licenses was an important part of Qt under Trolltech as it was the company's main source of income, but Trolltech is a fruit-fly compared to Nokia, who want to encourage and stimulate the use of Qt Everywhere [PDF]. This is fantastic news for all commercial developers looking to create cross-platform applications without the need to buy a $4950 multi-platform license per developer.

Hugh Pickens writes "While it may seem unlikely that single-celled organisms could be trained to salivate like Pavlov's dog at the sound of a bell, researchers say that bacteria can 'learn' to associate one stimulus with another by employing molecular circuits. This raises the possibility that bioengineers could teach bacteria to act as sentinels for the human body, ready to spot and respond to signs of danger. As with Pavlov's dog, the bacteria in the model learn to build stronger associations between the two stimuli the more they occur together. Now called Hebbian learning, it's often expressed as a situation in which 'neurons that fire together wire together.'" (More below.)

Otherland MMO Announced 142

Eurogamer breaks news that German games publisher DTP Entertainment will be making an MMORPG based on Tad Williams' Otherland series of books. As anyone who has read the books will know, this could be an interesting new spin on virtual worlds. Quoting: "For want of a better soundbite, let's call it the first cyberpunk MMO: a virtual world about virtual worlds, in which your avatar is an avatar, the NPCs play NPCs, and you explore a multiverse in which you might be in realistic historical surroundings one minute, and cartoon fantasy ones the next. Everything changes, even your own appearance, and nothing is even pretending to be real. ... You start the game as one of those consciousnesses in a place called the Land of the Lost, a nightmare scenario which you're trying to escape. You'll run, be killed, and reborn in a 'baby' state as a simple, low-rent sim (though we suspect the game won't be using that term, for obvious reasons) - a blank, featureless avatar that can be male, female or even neither."

__aajbyc7391 writes: It looks like Nokia is intent on knocking the ball out of the park with its Linux-powered Internet tablets. Today, the company unveiled the N810, its third attempt at hitting a home run with the concept. The new model adds a slide-out hardware keyboard, and also a built-in GPS receiver and FM transmitter (for in-car listening), among a number of other enhancements (such as a faster CPU and more memory). At this point, the device is positioned as an email and browsing tool, a social networking aid, a GPS, a VoIP phone, and a multimedia player (and streamer, thanks to built-in WiFi). But are the fans jumping out of their seats at this latest swing from mobile phone heavy-hitter Nokia?

Shocking everyone -- especially Engadget readers -- Nokia announced its new N810 this morning. Details are still incoming, but here's what we know for sure:
  • Same WVGA display as previously, increase of brightness ~20%
  • GPS with particular focus on the "context sensitive web" via Ovi
  • 2GB internal storage (not including memory cards), ships with maps for use with GPS
  • Faster processor, more RAM (we don't have specifics yet)
  • Battery life aimed at 4 hours of "typical use" and up to 2 weeks totally idle time, and 5 days active standby ("improved compared to previous generation devices)
  • Bluetooth DUNs to capable phones, totally Foleo-like
  • Runs Linux Maemo (duh)
  • Ships in november, $479
