Comment Re:I've been putting up with Amazon ads (Score 1) 37

This is the kind of nonsense people who sell ads tell to people who buy them, usually followed along with "studies" that contain an awful lot of conflicts of interest, questionable psychological findings, and bad statistics. I have no doubt that some advertising works. I can also tell you that it has unintended consequences - I do not go to gas pumps that advertise to me more than once, and I stopped going to a CVS near me because they changed their drink coolers to display ads alongside their product. People eventually become accustomed to colors, sights, and sounds of advertising and tune them out, to the point where things like the color red are actively discouraged in web design because so many advertisers used it in the early years to try and draw attention, and it is now ignored by most people.

If Google actually cared whether actual people were seeing their ads or not, they would have shut down all the various 5 minute craft and knock off channels years ago. There's basically an entire bot network of tens of thousands of accounts that operate out of Malaysia / Philippines that do nothing but copy, follow, and "watch" each others' videos for the ad revenue. Of course, if they ever did that, they would have to admit that their advertising numbers are incredibly overinflated, easily hijacked with minimal effort, and have no guarantee that any person would actually be watching them, and from there say goodbye to the people actually buying ads.

Subject line says most of it. The new interface is awful, and if you check out the firefox reddit or their official support forums, they seem completely oblivious to everyone complaining about it. Everything takes up too much space, they've brought in less distinction and readability on tabs, and they continue to remove functionality that's been in for ages. On the rare occasion they actually respond to why something was removed, they say it was due to low usage. Gee, maybe taking something away from a drop down menu and hiding it in the about:config with a warning about how toggling those things might screw up firefox might scare most people away from using it? Or even knowing it's there in the first place? I went back to their old extended support release. Everything from 91 and on is just awful from a UI perspective. The only reason I even use firefox over chrome is because I can't login to gmail without chrome assuming I want google to know everything I do on the internet.

While I agree that for simple use Open Office is certainly up to the task, it's become so filled with bloat and poorly optimized code that it's extremely slow to load regardless of machine. Their file translation could also use some work, as attempting to load an OO file saved as a word document can lead to some very funky documents.

Have you had vegemite? Whole grain breads? Congratulations, you've had brewing by-products. Brewing by-products includes things like yeast cakes which are extremely high in a wide variety of vitamins, some of which are difficult to obtain in other feeds outside of soy (which is getting more and more expensive). The whole grains still contain proteins and carbohydrates, which means they're great animal feed and can be used in whole grain products. I'm not aware that there's ever been any sort of food poisoning or scare traced back to spent grains, and a brief google search reveals none. On top of that, if you're doing something to your grains that makes them poisonous, odds are your beer isn't safe for consumption, either. There really is no need for the FDA to even look into this, as it's effectively been done for centuries with no problems.
