Ubuntu to Bring About Red Hat's Demise? 435

Tony Mobily has written a thought-provoking editorial for Free Software Magazine that makes the bold prediction of Red Hat's eventual demise at the hands of Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu. Calling on memories of Red Hat alienating their desktop user base to focus on their corporate customers and making money, Mobily states that many of those alienated desktop users are also system administrators who now feel more comfortable with Ubuntu and will make the choice to use Ubuntu Server over Red Hat now and in the future.

End of Win 98 Support May Boost Desktop Linux 581

An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft kills off support for Windows 98 and Windows ME today, and ZDNet is reporting that the move will boost demand for Linux on the desktop. Unlike two years ago — when support for Win98 was extended because Linux was seen as a serious competitor — this time it seems there is no turning back."

The new OS was created by Mattel to power the upcoming revision of its popular B-Book line of laptops for girls between the ages of four and eleven. The original B-Book laptop, which ran a modified version of PalmOS, was a huge hit with consumers last holiday season, so much so that many stores had trouble keeping them in stock."

Journal Journal: Why I've gone back to Windows on my laptop

I recently removed Linux from my laptop and went back to windows for the umpteenth time. This was for one simple reason - time. JWZ once said that open source is only free if your time costs nothing. Well my time doesn't cost anything in hard cash terms but it has value to me. When I'm not working I want to spend time with my family, making music, drinking wine and eating with friends, sitting around at our book group discussing the life, the universe and everything and occasionally the book
