And this is the problem.

I'm an, I don't know, advanced novice Linux user? Maybe more importantly, I'm not afraid to tinker and explore. I've run it on routers and my NAS. I just bought a new gaming PC and immediately installed Linux to see the state of things. I tried SteamOS but that didn't work so I went with Bazzite. Overall, it's honestly amazing how nearly seamless Lutris + Steam make things. Even got wireless VR to my kids' Quest 2 going. A few hoops to jump through here and there but for the most part you'd never guess the games are made for Windows. They just work.

Except for one. I've got one game I just haven't been able to get started and I think (though not positive) it's due to the Ubisoft anti-cheat software. It's not one I'm willing to give up and if I have to run Windows for it, I'm not going to dual boot and go back and forth so it looks like that's the end of my experiment. I'm not an anti-Microsoft zealot but I really wanted it to succeed. I was so close!

It only takes one.

I think this is only if you want commercial support. It's all a bit confusing to me and things could change at any time (and have) but as of Java 21:

JDK 21 binaries are free to use in production and free to redistribute, at no cost, under the Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC).

But yeah, for most people there's no difference so like you said, might as well use OpenJDK.

Youâ(TM)re talking about BlueSky and Iâ(TM)m talking about Mastodon/ActivityPub. Youâ(TM)re right, BlueSky can be considered Twitter by another name until they fully support independent instances.

Wikipedia and Reddit are good examples of ecosystems built on unpaid moderation. So the idea of leaning on that isnâ(TM)t completely novel.

But it can also support the business model of premium servers that cost money to join but might provide better moderation and other features. Medium has created one, for example:

So yes, I think itâ(TM)s interesting!

The thing about ActivityPub and decentralization is that instances can be kept small enough for whoever runs them to handle. It also means different people can be on different servers with different moderation philosophies that work for them.

In theory, of course.

In reality, today we are seeing large flagship instances that do have a heavy moderation load. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how this all pans out versus the Big Tech solutions.

I know it’s fashionable to shit all over Copilot and AI these days but I have one valuable use case from my experience.

My company started rolling out Copilot to a few people and it’s now coming to everyone. I haven’t had a chance to try whatever features they’ve added to the Office apps (and I agree a lot of it seems dubious) but we have started using the AI generated notes/summaries of Teams meetings and we’ve been really impressed by it.

Not saying it’s worth an extra 30% but there is value to be found. Sure, AI is a new hammer and everything looks like a nail. But there are some actual nails out there.

Unfortunately, LR devices don't support mesh. They don't support associations, either. They are a compromise.

I'm also on Home Assistant and Z-Wave JS. The devices themselves are fully backward compatible. I have a 700 series hub that doesn't support LR. I recently added the Zooz ZEN71 switch and ZEN34 remote switch which are both 800 series and support LR. I've associated them to act like a 3-way switch and my network map shows the ZEN71 part of the mesh and hops to a device before reaching the hub.

With a hub that supports LR, is it a choice you make when you include the device to connect as LR or not? And you lose those features if it does?

According to the Z-Wave Alliance:

While the network topologies are different, Z-Wave can support both a mesh network and a star network. Both Z-Wave LR and traditional Z-Wave nodes can co-exist within the same network, enabling a wide variety and combination of Z-Wave devices and Z-Wave LR devices. To unlock the full potential of Z-Wave LR, both the gateway/hub and the installed Z-Wave device must feature Z-Wave LR. So long as both the gateway/hub and connected device feature the Z-Wave LR specification, that network has the capability to support both a mesh network and star network.

My PC is connected with ethernet and I have 5GHz wi-fi but still, it’s crazy. Pistol Whip, Beat Saber, all great.

Passkeys are kept on a user’s devices (something the user “has”) and — if the RP requests User Verification — can only be exercised by the user with a biometric or PIN (something the user “is” or ”knows”). Thus, authentication with passkeys embodies the core principle of multi-factor security.
