Obama To Nearly Double the Available Broadband Wireless Spectrum 194

suraj.sun tips news that the Obama administration announced today plans to free up roughly 500MHz of the wireless spectrum for commercial broadband. From the Washington Post: "The commitment backs a proposal by the Federal Communications Commission to auction off broadcasters' and government spectrum to commercial carriers that envision their networks running home appliances, automobile applications, tablet computers and other wireless devices. White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers said in a speech outlining the president's plan that freeing up more spectrum will spur economic growth through auctions of the airwaves and investment in wireless networks and technology. ... The FCC has proposed that 280 megahertz of spectrum come from broadcasters and other sources, 120 of which would come from broadcasters. The other 220 megahertz would come from the federal government's holdings managed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration."

APB To Use In-Game Audio Advertisements 97

Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports that upcoming action MMOG APB: All Points Bulletin will use in-game audio advertisements as part of its business model. The number of ads you hear will be limited: "you'll only hear an ad when you go into a new zone, and that's only once every three hours." Nevertheless, some gamers are upset that these ads will be included on top of APB's already unusual payment plans. The game is set for release next Tuesday. Producer Jesse Knapp says of Realtime Worlds' goals for APB, "We looked at other online action games, and we saw things we felt could be better. Only 12 to 32 players in a match, bad connection due to peer-to-peer, dead cities, way too much time in lobbies, things like that. So what we set out to do was to make a game that has that online player vs. player action game experience in a large city with other players around, no lobbies, dynamic matchmaking, dedicated servers, great experience, and that's been one of the driving factors of APB from the very beginning." CVG recently previewed the game.

May want to move this to the warhammer forums, but it depends on your video card. If you have lower than 512 it won't let you use the video ram as a buffer since the video card probably needs that ram to handle graphical processing.

They used to let you, but it would cause other issues like low texture qualities and anomalies.

Try out buffthrottle if you haven't already.

But aye. A keep door buff/debuff list gets long as hell when 40 players are beating on it.

I dunno about all the people saying too bad Warhammer didn't beat WOW or something similar, as if WOW is just gonna fall over dead after Warhammer was released. Our server (Vortex) is active as hell and we have a great community on the forums. I'll take a small group of good players over a massive influx of whiny brats any day of the week.

From the Fine Article:

"An I.P. address is assigned to every computer on the Internet. Each time that computer sends an e-mailâ"or is used to make a purchase via a Web browserâ"it has to reveal its I.P. address, which tells its geographic location.

two things.

1.) Not every computer gets a public IP address. Most normal PCs just sit on a RFC1918 network, and usually the router gets the "public" IP. This can be one computer, or fifty.

2.) IP may equal the geographic location of your network, or it can be the location of a proxy, which can be anywhere.

This is the kind of thinking that leads to IP = smoking gun. And FWIW obtaining the IP of anyone is trivial if you really wanted to. This guy makes it sound like it's some secret "Where's Waldo's Network" game.
