Comment This sucks for me (Score 1) 129

I have an older Roku with an unofficial YouTube client on it. It's not heavy on features but it allows searching and is fast and simple, and has no ads (that is probably why Google is changing things!)

I have a Roku 3 and the YouTube client on there is awful, it's slow and cumbersome and worst of all it keeps autoplaying videos after the one you're watching finishes, with absolutely no way to turn that off. No doubt it is to display more ads for those that accidentally leave YouTube running, but if I was an advertiser that little trick wouldn't make me happy.

For now I'm sticking with my old Roku, but I know the days are numbered.

Comment VB isn't so bad (Score 1) 648

I've run a small business with VB for 20 years. Commercial software and database, website CGIs, order system, all written and maintained in-house. I know VB inside and out and it does everything I need for this (relatively simple) operation.

Maybe VB teaches "bad habits" but properly written and commented code is more important than the language.

Comment Checklist for MS (Score 4, Informative) 489

It needs to be smooth, it needs to be organized. The OS needs to stay out of the way and not over-complicate things. We are there to run applications, not Windows. Windows needs to run and organize files and applications, that's it.

A simple file copy shouldn't take several minutes to start. When I say copy, start copying! We need Windows, not tiles. Windows is the name of the OS after all, and IMO the Windows paradigm still works. They need to preserve backward compatibility except when it would too badly affect performance or security. And I don't think it would or else MS themselves wouldn't be recommending DOSBOX to run 16-bit applications.

Apparently everyone should be allowed to dance around naked smoking weed and singing "Lalalalala I fuck your mother' and you can't say a damn thing about it. Because they're not hurting anyone, just ignore them.

I mean I'm only being partly sarcastic, maybe they should be able to. But what kind of a zoo is the world going to be if everyone can just spout out any sort of nonsense they want at any time under the umbrella of free speech?

There have to be some sort of limits, it's defining the limits that is the tricky part.

Comment Use good folder names (Score 1) 259

Personally I maintain my own directory structure and use an OLD version of ThumbsPlus to view the photos. It is also good for things like batch converting and rotation.

I have an Incoming folder for unsorted-direct-from-camera photos, then when I sort them out I make folders with a naming scheme like this:

YYYYMMDD - Hiking on Blue Ridge Parkway

I also make a folder for miscellaneous pictures for each year named YYYY0000 - Miscellaneous.

Comment Re:About time! (Score 1) 129

The calls I've received say something like (in an Indian accent) "This is Robert from Windows, we are calling because it has been reported your computer has errors and is sending them over the Internet."

I've also given them the "Does your mother know what you do for a living?" line. They try to justify what they're doing and I cut them off and say "You're a scammer and you're stealing people's money and you should be ashamed." That's when they hang up.

Anyway TFA doesn't specifically say this operation is the one with the Indian accent callers, but I sure hope so. Although the "cardholder services" robo-calls got shut down a few years ago only to re-emerge strong as ever in the last year or so. I even resorted to pressing 5 to opt out, which actually seemed to work for while, but now I'm back to 1 or 2 calls a day from them. :(

Comment Am I the only one? (Score 1) 120

Am I the only one that thinks having an exploding bag in your car is a dumb idea from the beginning? No doubt they have saved some lives, but how many of those people would have been ok with just seatbelts? Also how many people were injured by airbag deployment (in properly working airbags, not these defective metal-spewing airbags!) that would have otherwise been unharmed?
