Comment Discovery+ was always the outlier (Score 1) 56

Discovery+ was always the outlier in the streaming market. It was never an especially popular service in terms of subscribers, but its content costs were low, and its subscribers fairly loyal (lower churn than some other services). In the various merger discussions, it was never even mentioned as whether or how it would be integrated into the eventual streaming combination.

Why was this downvoted?

I mean that as a legit question: I thought the coward accurately described Tesla's self-driving promise ... but I'm no Tesla expert, so what's wrong about his take?

AC posts start at score 0. The score may increase, or decrease, based on those voting with mod points, but AFAIT, if the net result is zero, the score still shows as zero, so it is not at all clear if that post was downvoted, or just any potential upvotes and downvotes cancelled themselves out.

It is (as it has always been) some people who will try to manipulate the scores to increase engagements. If there was any actual accountability in this forum, all the voters would be publicly visible, so that those that decided that [some user] was biased could choose that their votes be excluded from their view of a score, but that might impact page views (and profit), and we (well, the site admins) would not want that.

Fabless IP is the norm in the industry. Nvidia and Apple are no different in that respect. And really, these are more like chips that compete with what Amazon, Meta, and Google are doing. Again, most of them also go to TSMC or Samsung for their foundry.

Don't forget that Intel's foundry business is starting to build chips for many of these companies (and they did announce Microsoft was a customer for an unnamed chip a number of months ago, along with AWS being mentioned as using the Intel foundry for some of their AI chips). There is no disagreement that TSMC is the 100,000kg gorilla in the foundry business (something like 75% of the market).

Canonical had a previous DDOS attack. Apparently they chose not to engage one of the various DDOS prevention services (Cloudflare is well known, but they are not the only solution provider in this space). "Fool me once, shame on you. Shame we twice, shame on me." So, shame on Canonical.

This was not some secret: it's a playbook Broadcom has used on acquisitions before. Maintaining a virtualization company was never their goal: it was to make money fleecing the company's corpse.

And Computer Associates (now owned by Broadcom), demonstrated the way decades before Broadcom even existed.

I would have though that by now they are all gone. Probably those left are the ones that stupidly painted themselves into a corner and never thought about exist strategies.

For some customers, they looked at the resources needed to migrate, and decided it was cheaper to stay put and/or invest the resources that would be needed elsewhere in their business.

I doubt Broadcom is going to get many new customers, but Broadcom seems to be OK with that.

A negotiated settlement was always the most likely outcome (they usually are in such suits). Neither side is likely to be entirely pleased with the result (it is a compromise, not a one sided win). And while pundits will argue for years as to whether the industry is better or worse for the merger, what-if's are just conjecture.
