I read the memo (trying to stay awake while doing it was hard) and if there would really be an "aggressive" hiring of women at google
it does not show.
Feeling threatened much ?

Either his points are invalid and he was promoting a hiring policy based on bad ideas so he looses
Or his points are valid and he is trying to "fix" a problem that does not exist at google (IMHO unfortunately) why waste time to keep "X" away from the company when in practice there are very few "X", so he still looses.
In practice having an inclusive strategy and doing some "positive discrimination" has as main effect the removal of the more mediocre "privileged" members, they are also the ones who feel the most threatened by anything that shakes the status-quo...
But in reality it is a benefit for the "privileged" group, because it forces them to be better.
BTW fun fact, it seems that ageism is not at issue either in the diversity "promotion" nor in the "memo", but it is a subject of interest for google : http://www.businessinsider.fr/...
I hope his job went to an over 55 woman of color, somehow I doubt it
And incidentally the population of australia almost doubled in the same time frame
so the numbers should be re normalized as % of death by massacre to really compare.
Well the government is very clearly regulating what kind of apples are going in mom's apple pie,
To sell apples you need to make sure the variety is "registered", etc,
So instead of having 1000s of varieties 100 years ago, we have now about 20, 5 of which represent 75% of the market.
The sad thing is that most people do not give a S*t
Well people do die because the government was good at linking them to some terrorist activities, the issue is : who defines what is terrorism, and how to you make the difference between dying and dying wrongfully ?
Even without the obvious goodwin point generating reference, many people died for "links to terrorism" in Latin American under Western friendly governments.
And if backdoring is possible, it is obvious that the US corporations will offer the technology to "allied government" like for instance the freedom loving, terrorist fighting great ally Saudi Arabia, just to give an obvious example.
And the case for the guns is rather simpler, you do not want somebody with an history of domestic violence to have an easy access to guns, nor somebody with an history of violent crime.
So you need to let your representative negotiate with the administration for some sort of reasonable level of gun control, and have a plan to limit contraband, since obviously if you have background check for ammo, the illegal economy will jump in the vacuum created and start to offer check free ammo on the street.
Of course it would help if you would stop electing a majority of certified morons as your representatives.
Yes they had special little flaps to hide the E whenever they flew over english speaking countries...
and by the way I have a bridge to sell you
Thank you for that ! yes pensions that go directly to the people needing them right now are much more efficient than "capitalized pensions" which means that people who have no real idea what they are doing are allowed to slice some money out of you pot every year as "management fees", and when you retire the people who are working now do not feel that they have any reason to give you something since you had the opportunity to "save" well minus whatever the corporations or the banks feel fit to slice off, and of course since it's private, no voting
And I miss the Concorde, and a time where a young scientist could go see a high level manager with real technical and scientific knowledge and make something like this happen.
Sure the "CFOs" where probably thinking of this as a promotion gimmick, but still it was possible.
Thanks to all the AC for clarifying why Trump might become you president....
As a side note: positively discrimination on a goal oriented challenge would be beside the point, after all you want the maximum of "what ever" from the winner...
But not going through a phase of positive discrimination has two drawbacks, you get less talented people from the discriminated group, and you give the illusion to a whole bunch of idiots in the advantaged group that they are actually worth something in their chosen activity, instead of letting them either try harder, or change business.
So as defined in the Hacker's Dictionary Loose Loose !
Well why would a gifted senior software developer do less than a US Senator ?
Of course I guess mr O'Neill is try to buy a couple of senators in order to correctly assess the relative value...
It's like VPN's to go around the "great firewall" or satellite dishes, yes it's kind of illegal, but meehhh...
It's a nice to have add on if the government decide to arrest someone, and meanwhile it gives the reactionary class the feeling that "everything is ok", while letting the educated class breath just a tiny little bit and not completely freak out.
It depends on the country, the US/UK model is "you pay through the node you lazy bastards" including things that they "really need to be the best scientist an thinker for the future" like 0.5 Giga $ for the UCB statium "renovation"
Other countries still believe that it's saner if the whole society pays for the education of the next generations...
So yes everybody is part of the society, but it does not mean that everybody has access to something paid by all, or not
There are two models of education, either "society" invests in its future and education is free or close to free (including higher ed.)
because educated people are the ones who are able to builds a long term sustainable economy and pay our retirements.
Or education is an individual choice and you should pay for it, and society just invest to avoid loosing some of the outliers among people without the necessary means...
In the first case it might be argued that "as society pays" they have "some right of supervision"
In the second case, WTF how dare you define "how" I'm supposed to organize my time, ok I'm not allowed to do a strip tease in a restaurant just because I ordered food, but how much I eat, if I eat, and what exactly I choose are the privileges I BUY.
Now our bright politicians supported by armies of idiots are doing their best to give us the worst of both models...
You pay through the nose huge amounts of money, and you have very little say about what you really study, how, at what rythm and now they want to hover over students schoulders to make sure they act "as expected"....
So the only advice I have is : study things you are really interested in, or who are helping you learn things useful for some future goal, find the cheapest place possible to study, at least for the untergrad part (for graduation studies, if you have to pay for it, you probably aren't good enough, work harder
And do no try to study "for work"/"to be adapted to the industry/corporate/business world", what ever that world will be when you start to really look for a job, it has little to do with what your professors know now, and close to nothing to do with the world as it was when the courses where designed
So "use" professors for what they might be good at, scientific knowledge and knowing how to learn...
And for the rest, try to find an activity that you really like (well not this one, another additional one
Good luck
Explain that the internet is now closed and replaced by the better safer faster outternet, do not change anything else...
It was quite obvious from day one that the people who organize the party have absolutely zero interest in Larry's platform, and that they will make sure that anything like his project gets hidden from the general public.
As soon as he had any chance to be something more than a "decorative" candidate the party would make sure that he is blocked, because the system suits them just fine.
The core issue is that the sheep vote for who ever has the more shiny adverts, so there is no "short term fix", maybe something like a 10 year project starting with a general campaign telling the public to under no circumstance vote for an incumbent candidate, no matter how bad the other guys are the only way you as a citizen can be listened is by showing that you have the power to punish a politician, and you need to punish all of them just for being unable to fix the system.
Then campaign on : look at the tools that enable you to asses you representatives past performance, and future projects, ignore their adverts they are of no value what so ever...
Then maybe, just maybe for the third round people will vote for their candidates because they believe in what they are achieving, or really planning to achieve and not because they have more shiny ads and are not quite as bad as the other guy(gal).
The whole story stinks, and one of the turdiest element is that there are people allowed to vote who still think that "the bad guy" is actually putting a display on the bomb to help the "good guy" to know how much time they've got to "disarm" the doomsday equipment....
In practice the fact that there is a readable timer is quite the proof that this is not a bomb...
All the teachers, administrative staff and cops should be fired without pay and put on trial with various level of punitive damage...
Unfortunately this is not going to happen
