The Future Might Be BIOS and Browsers 350

An anonymous reader writes "Few in the open source community have welcomed online applications like Google Docs with open arms, but Keir Thomas claims he's found a way forward — and it's one that involves exclusively open source. He reckons BIOS-based operating systems are the future, because they will alter the way users think about their computers. FTA: 'The key breakthrough is ideological: BIOS-based operating systems demote the operating system to just another function of the hardware. It breaks the old mindset of the operating system being a distinct platform, or an end in itself. The operating system becomes part of the overall computing appliance. This allows the spotlight to focus on online applications.'"

Estonian ISP Shuts Srizbi Back Down, For Now 237

wiedzmin writes "In response to the recent resurrection of the Srizbi botnet, an Estonian ISP has shut down the hosting company that was housing its new control servers. Starline Web Services, based in Estonia's capital Tallinn, had become the new home for the Srizbi botnet control center after the McColo hosting company (which was taken down earlier this month) has briefly come back to life last week, allowing the botnet to hand-off control to the Estonian network. After Estonia's biggest ISP Linxtelecom demanded that Starline Web Service be taken offline, the newly acquired Srizbi control servers went down with it. However, as the rootkit is armed with an algorithm that periodically generates new domain names where the malware then looks for new instructions, it is only a matter of time before a new set of control servers is created and used to manipulate one of the biggest spam botnets in the world."

Whats the problem with Root running a sports book? Why would a libertarian object to someone running a business?

Ive worked in IT for a bookmaker for several years. There are bookmakers on the highstreet in every town in this country (Ireland). Its a perfectly legitimate business...

America is a strange place.

Bank Run in Second Life 336

Jamie found an interesting bit about a bank run in Second Life. The recent ban on gambling combined with a $12k theft from the 2L stock market has caused people to try to get their money back. The article mentions that this could supposedly affect 8.5M players even tho most estimates of actual hard core players in the system are in the 5 to low 6 figure range.

Journal Journal: Suggestions on Moderation 3

OK, I'm back to positive karma. Another example that it is possible to regain yourself from bad karma.

Anyway, I just wanted to provide some suggestions to the sensitive moderators out there on slashdot.

The main thing is this: Keep in mind that when you moderate someone as funny, it does not help their karma, and it can sometimes hurt it if it gets the attention of a moderator who lacks a sense of humor.

Journal Journal: Slashdot Moderators are Insensitive! 2

All I'm trying to do is make slashdot a bit more sensitive, and what do I get? Moderated as a troll, that's what.

Oh sure, I get modded as Funny, but that doesn't help my karma. I've only made 7 posts so far and already I have bad karma. What in the world am I going to tell my sensei now?
