Submission + - 'Dump Your Bank Day' appears to catch on (cnn.com) 3

suraj.sun writes: Customers are dumping their banks in droves ahead of the nationwide "Move Your Money" and "Bank Transfer Day" movements this Saturday. Given the recent spotlight on attempts — and ultimate failures — by some of the nation's biggest banks to tack on new debit card fees, thousands of disgruntled consumers have already either left or pledged to leave their current bank for a community bank or credit union, which are known for having fewer and/or lower bank account fees.

At least 650,000 consumers have already joined credit unions since Sept. 29, the day Bank of America announced plans to impose its controversial $5 debit card fee, according to a nationwide survey of credit unions by the Credit Union National Association. And while Bank of America and other banks have since backpedaled on imposing the fees, consumers are making it clear they are still fed up. More than 4 in every 5 credit unions said new customers cited days like "Bank Transfer Day" and new fees imposed by their banks as reasons for opening accounts.

Feedback Sought for Proposed Mobile Firefox UIs 28

jangel writes to give us a look at the prototype UIs for Mobile Firefox, which is currently under development. Mozilla project lead Doug Turner has asked for opinions on the design. Quoting: "Comments on the Wiki provide an idea of the choices the developers still have to make. For example, should the chevron at the right of the toolbar open a history page listing the most recently viewed pages, or -- as on desktop Firefox -- merely a list of most frequently typed URLs? And should "full screen" mode hide everything except the page being browsed, or retain the lowermost toolbar? Turner writes that while the user interfaces shown are merely starting points, 'going from the pretty pictures that Photoshop can produce to something that is functional is easy with the Mozilla platform. Building functional prototypes ... using only Javascript, XML, CSS, and images is really awesome.'"

Submission + - Python 3.0 to be backwards incompatible

Stony Stevenson writes: Organisations using the programming language Python will be majorly affected by changes in store for the language over the course of the next twelve months, Linux.conf.au attendees were told this morning. The Python development community is working towards a new, backwards incompatible version of the language, version 3.0, which is slated for release in early 2009. Anthony Baxter, the release manager for Python and a senior software engineer at Google Australia, said all code would be broken back and all programs using Python will need changes. Baxter also added another tidbit for attendees saying that Python accounts for around 15 percent of Google's code base.

Submission + - Harvesting Energy from the Human Body

Late-Eight writes: "Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology are working on a new type of nanogenerator that could draw necessary energy from flowing blood in the human body. The hope is to incorporate the new nanogenerator into biosensors, environmental monitoring devices and even personal electronics that will require no fuel source, internal or external. Once completed, this new cellular engine could find various applications, even beyond medicine."

Compare with WoW, where you might have a 100% chance of getting something if you complete some difficult task. There are plenty of instances in WoW where you'll have to use a large set of abilities to manage to succeed. Fail, and you can try again very quickly instead of packing up and waiting until tomorrow. That's hard, but not due to a time requirement, due to a skill requirement.

The time requirement comes into effect, too. There are several more instances (Five currently, one more comming out next month) where you have even more things to manage, and if you fail, you can't try again for three days or a week, depending ont he reset times.

Anybody who calls WoW dumbed down needs to sit through the Razorgore fight, and keep in mind that there are three (soon to be four) dungeons worth of bosses that put Razorgore's twelve minutes of pure chaos to shame.

For reference: Razorgore is the first boss (For that matter, the first hostile NPC you encounter in BWL, no "trash" pulls leading in) in Black Wing Lair. He comes complete with roughly 80 assorted mobs by the end of the first half of the fight, many of which can oneshot anything that isn't in plate armor. You need to manage all of this crap at the same time, while keeping Razorgore alive so you can battle several orcs for control of him. You use him to destroy the dragon eggs and stop more crap from spawning all around you, clean out the immense hordes of orcs and dragonkin, and THEN you get into the actual two-phase fight against Razorgore himself, which would be nontrivial going in at 100%, let alone how much the first half of the battle takes out of a raid. One person fucks up, does something stupid, screws up kiting or even walks in the wrong place? You all die, incur a repair bill tha can top 5 gold for warriors. You can't run away, the gates close behind you and the door in front of you leads to an even harder fight.

This fight is not a matter of having good gear - drops from much, much harder fights do not trivialize Razorgore yet, and it's doable with less gear than is needed in the lower level raid Molten Core - it's not a matter of grinding or farming. It's a matter of reflexes, practice, and just pure dumb luck most of the time.

I've heard a lot of people suggest WoW is "dumbed down." I've yet to meet somebody who will say that after they've done a Tribute run in Dire Maul North, done the Warlords Command quest, or even attempted (Much less succeeded) in the Baron's Ultimatum. Reducing the player cap in endgame dungeons from 10 to 5 has already made the end game impressively difficult. The final bosses in most endgame dungeons are now a challenge that's hardly reflected in the loot they give.

The problem isn't that it's an ad hominem attack trying to disprove his points--it's try to point out the absurdity of the headline. Moore is not, by any stretch of the imagination, an environmentalist. That's the draw of the article, both here on /. and in the Washington Post. Dear Lord, an environmentalist is supporting nuclear power? Well, golly, maybe it ain't so bad!

Fact is, he's a PR man. Regardless of whether he makes good points or bad, calling him a "Green" or an "environmentalist" is flat out inaccurate.

Why is it, every time I make a joke, it gets modded insightful or informative? Am I really really bad at making jokes, or am I really really good at making jokes?

Journal Journal: Fucking Omelette

Goddamn it! I posted a really important article to slashdot, talking about the proposed DCIMA and it's imposition of copyright restrictions on publicly available facts. Pretty important stuff, a topic that the slashdot crowd would be interested in. No mention of the DCIMA in the archives. And yet, once again, they rejected it. What the fuck? I get that they have a bunch of different posts coming in every frickin' day, but, jeeeeez, do we have to follow every twist and turn in the SCO story
