Comment I use the non vendor-lock-in parts of GitHub (Score 2) 32

I only use GitHub as a dumb git repo for my open-source projects. That way, I never really have to interact with the website itself, my stuff isn't stuck there, and Microsoft doesn't get to invade my privacy and monetize my data.

In other words, I waste Microsoft's resources and they get nothing in return. That's why, despite by burning hatred of Microsoft, I host my stuff there. And I abuse the hell out of the storage capabilities too.

And therefore I never see any AI garbage from GitHub.

OMG THIS!!! A million times this!!! You have hit on every pet peeve of mine that has become a norm with the advent of the "everyone can code" movement. What used to be an elegant art form of writing bullet proof software to withstand the test of time has devolved into a "we'll clean it up later" enshitification of the craft. I used to see mind-blowing artisans at work, then came the StackOverflow cut-and-pasters, then the "duct tape 20 packages together" to print a string to stdout, and now the vibe coders with 3000-line PRs of AI slop.

Every sign points to a new COBOL-esque super cycle where graybeards get pulled in to scape away countless layers of machine-generated "code" in order to get a broken system back on track.

It doesn't matter if they're disgusted.

It's not like Apple, which also did that back in the days to get students hooked to Apple computers, because Apple computers were better.

Microsoft has a virtual monopoly on the professional marketplace: the point is to get the kids used to using Microsoft cloud shit before they start their career so there's no friction - and therefore no pushback - when they get their first job. The point is to make sure Microsoft is kind of the natural thing in the background to people who are focused on trying to do well at their first job.

Psychologically, this goes a long way towards ensuring Microsoft quietly maintains their monopoly and nobody questions if there's something better that might make sense at work.

I remember once, long ago, a self-important, arrogant supervisor pushed me a little too hard and I called him an SOB. We were called into his boss's office and given the choice between apologizing and getting fired. After a moment's thought, I decided that I had nothing to lose and told him, "I'm sorry I told you you're an SOB." After a long moment's thought, he accepted it, never realizing that I hadn't actually apologized at all, but repeated the insult. Needles to say, I started looking for a new job right away.

And thank you, too. You wanted to know why I voted for Trump even though I wasn't really a supporter, and when I explained my reasoning you found it acceptable, even if you may not have agreed with it. How many people do you know that can do that instead of constantly pushing to get me to admit that I was wrong and that Harris would have been a better choice? For that matter, how many people do you know who would have ended up insulting me for not marching in lock step with their ideas? You sir are to be commended.

Let's say it this way: I thought I knew what to expect from Trump and was OK with it. I didn't expect him to go completely around the bend after the election. I had very little idea of what to expect from Harris, except that she was too far to the left for my tastes, just as Biden was. Under the circumstances, I found Trump the lessor of two evils.

What makes you think that was my only reason to oppose her? It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for me, but there were a lot of other things I didn't like such as her leftist attitudes and beliefs in general. I'm a moderate, slightly to the right, and she went too far to the left for my tastes.
