Comment Re:Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? (Score 1) 60

Personally, I cannot stand RTSes or MMOs, although I might eventually enjoy an MMO. The decision to make a game open is not a new thing. RPGs (the paper and pencil version!) did this a long, long time ago (there is probably another example, but I'm going with what I know and not doing any additional research for just this comment).

I enjoy L4D (I really like FPSes). I don't see it as open. It is definitely a led-by-the-nose experience. It's not the destination that's fun, it's how you get there, with a particular group of people at any given time. The HL/HL2 series, as well as Deus Ex and Far Cry (2 was way too repetitive), I found very enjoyable, again, being led by the nose, but having the freedom to wander around aimlessly along the way, as fits my mood at any given time.

The reason I brought up paper and pencil RPGs is because many game masters write up linear campaigns, and often fail to adapt to what the players are actually doing and how they are reacting. Campaigns written by game masters who have story arcs, which may be followed or abandoned, are lots of fun to play. I think the state-of-the-art gaming is not yet up to the task, but Elder Scrolls (turn-based FPS?) seemed like it was going along the right path.

MMOs (I've never really played, just watched for a few minutes, I can see how it can be fun), seem to be trying to go along that path, the path of open-endedness, but there isn't enough for any given player with lots of experience to actually do, other than go through the same set of missions over and over...sounds like L4D?

Now, if you could start setting up your fortress and hold it against random players trying to invade it...

IWF Backs Down On Wiki Censorship 226

jonbryce writes "The Internet Watch Foundation, guardians of the Great Firewall of Britain, have stopped censoring Wikipedia for hosting what they considered to be a child porn image. They had previously threatened to block Amazon for hosting the same image." Here is the IWF's statement, which credits the Streisand Effect for opening their eyes: "...in light of the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability, the decision has been taken to remove this webpage from our list. Any further reported instances of this image which are hosted abroad, will not be added to the list. ... IWF's overriding objective is to minimize the availability of indecent images of children on the internet, however, on this occasion our efforts have had the opposite effect."

New Material Can Selectively Capture CO2 285

Socguy brings us a story from CBC News about a recently developed crystal that can soak up carbon dioxide gas "like a sponge." Chemists from UCLA believe that the crystals will become a cheap, stable method to absorb emissions at power plants. We discussed a prototype for another CO2 extraction device last year. Quoting: "'The technical challenge of selectively removing carbon dioxide has been overcome,' said UCLA chemistry professor Omar Yaghi in a statement. The porous structures can be heated to high temperatures without decomposing and can be boiled in water or solvents for a week and remain stable, making them suitable for use in hot, energy-producing environments like power plants. The highly porous crystals also had what the researchers called 'extraordinary capacity for storing CO2': one litre of the crystals could store about 83 litres of CO2."

Drug Shows Early Promise Against Alzheimer's 46

The feed delivers news from Ars Technica about a new and promising treatment for Alzheimer's. The drug Etanercept works by disabling the functioning of a cytokine called TNFa, and reportedly caused immediate improvement — in minutes — in mental functioning in one Alaheimer's patient. Double-blind studies have not yet begun.

Funny you should mention him. A few months ago he flamed me in a thread and I shot right back at him and got banned for the effort. He is as big a jerk in real life as he is online (hi Chris! .|... ). I am glad he is gone.

Slashdot is broken. Look at my comments from June 22 my last postings prior to this.

I like posting and have 'excellent karma' but too many moderators are pushing a political agenda these days. As a response I am going to meta-moderate all political moderations as unfair. If more of us do that eventually the unscrupulus moderators will be culled from the system.

They will probably suspend my account eventually but I don't really care anymore. After the election I think I am going to create a new account and start fresh.

p.s. What's up with all the 503s? I think Taco might be in over his head.

Okay, so does anyone read these? If you're reading this (and you're not me), please comment. I'm rather curious to see who does look through journals. Why would be nice, too (like, you were meta-moderating and checked out my stuff, or whatever).
