Banning falsehoods does not eliminate new falsehoods nor does it foster an individual to develop better critical thinking skills. If you provide all the information available you can then let the person make the judgement for themselves.
Learn from history, prohibition does not work (whether its banning books, drugs, ideas, religions, philosophies, fast foot...you name it)...in fact it often causes the exact opposite, effect or causes resentment and unrest taken to its most extreme.
You want people to decide for themselves with all the information available possible, let them be stewards of their own existence and choices. If you do not teach critical thinking skills you will always end up in a situation from protecting people from "X".
And lets be completely clear, most of the falsehoods you are referring to are national enquirer-esque in nature. The algorithms that aggregate and feed people "shit" to keep them plugged into the platform are to blame more than the content, and these systems have been in place, used and exploited for YEARS. Facebook has been sued many times and so has Youtube.
Its no different than booze and cig ads, you do something about malicious behavior modification and brainwashing practices used to exploit people, not by outright banning the substance, its discussion or even ridiculing those who partake, because you will not win. And even if you win on "X", "Y" will be right behind it because the problem was not actually addressed, just the symptom.
I've said it before and I will say it again...the radical right of the 80's have now become the radical left of today...you all are just like your parents and grandparents...you just have different personal leanings.
