Are Micro-Transactions the Future of Online Game Business Models? 68

Last week we discussed news of Sony Online Entertainment's unveiling of a store that would allow players to purchase in-game Everquest items for real money. Massively spoke with John Smedley, SOE's CEO, about the system and what their goals were. He made the point that they were limiting sales to things that wouldn't unbalance the game. "They're fun and they're convenient. That's all they are. We're not selling power. There are a lot of respectable viewpoints on this, and a lot of reasonable people can disagree on them. Our view is that nothing here is gamebreaking." Edge Magazine has a related piece about Mytheon, an upcoming action-strategy game that will rely on micro-transactions to support its otherwise free-to-play business model. The game's producer suggests that micro-transactions are "a model that really gets us closer to the end user, and that's the way things need to be in the future, online."

Comment Re:Does not cover modding (Score 1) 54

The precedent on modding (through company tools or not) is that it's illegal when a person begins to profit from it. Prior to that, as a 'hobby' it's fine. Think about the people who design clothing, furniture, skins, etc for the Sims(2). They aren't breaking a law because they don't profit from it.

Which is why nobody can stop you from modding your PC game to put in stick figures instead of 3d avatars if you want (ok, my first thought was naked avatars, but that's dull eh?). It's only if you sell it that is illegal -- which was covered by the article. Modding? Fine. Selling Mods without a license? Bad.

MMOG Sites Under IGE Merging? 52

CTD writes "Grimwell Online notes that IGE has announced a merger of networks involving: Thottbott, Allakhazam, OGaming, and L2Orphus. There is a thread in the Allakhazam forums that brings all the release data together - but still leaves some questions about what is to come. Grimwell raises one in his post about this: 'Even more fun for our friends who work PR for gaming companies. IGE = RMT, which is not the Devil - but is not exactly welcomed at most companies. Will this move help push things past the tipping point and force developers to deal with the new, larger network?'"

Sue me, I'm slow.

I've posted a few more now, and am working on my Narrative in Gaming thesis, or something like that.

Besides, I can't manage to post as much random stuff as you do in a given day, I need to put more thought into my ramblings! :p~

Journal Journal: Narration in MMOGs

I've heard this bandied about plenty of times, in threads such as this one from Waterthread.org, how the narrative can mean life or death to a players sense of immersion in a game. How much are the developers expected to to move teh storyline along for players, and how much needs to come from the players themselves?

Even the mundane can be beautiful.

Driving in to work this morning, I got to see some of Nature's own special beauty.

If you didn't already know, the Chicagoland area received a late April Fool's Day joke this past weekend. On Sunday night, it started snowing and by Monday morning, we had a nice sloppy 4" inches of wet snow on the ground. Then Monday and early Tuesday were misty, damp days hovering right around freezing. Ah! Spring in Chicagoland!

"I'm going to beat on your monkey skull until it rings like a Chinese gong!"

Quote from some movie. No idea what one, I heard it on the radio station I listen to in the car. I just thought it was funny as hell, and the quote has been floating around inside my head for the last few days.

Things I want to write about

A mini review of SB for my site. For the 1 person that reads it other than myself.
