It's called "royalties". What does technology have to do with it? It's a practice that's been around since the most sophisticated piece of accounting technology was the pencil.

I can't think of anything that would increase the lifespan of an iPhone than making the battery consumer-replaceable. I'm not likely to want to spend ~$90 to replace the battery in a four year old phone that's otherwise perfectly serviceable. But I'd definitely spend $25 to purchase a new battery that I could pop in myself.

Comment Leverage the free ink (Score 1) 97

In the right situation, this can be OK. Imagine you need to print a lot of stuff in a relatively short period of time (say...I don't know...maybe six months or less). Getting all the ink you need to do this for free* can offset the $85 purchase price of the printer. When the free ink deal ends, donate it to whomever will take it. The tax deduction will offset the purchase price even more.

* I have not read the fine print of the HP Plus contract, so I don't know if there's some limit on the free ink deal.
