Comment Re:Trip was downhill for 1,300 meters (Score 2) 201

Ok, so the car travelled 1,205 Km, that's 1,205,000 meters, while dropping 1,310 meters. That makes it a gradient, if it was a continuous slope, of 1,310/(1,205,000/100), the gradient being the difference in height over 100 meters. That's 0.187%. A car left in neutral without the parking brake set will not even start to roll. And I am pretty sure that it was not downhill all the way either.

Nah, it's a byproduct of your weird election system. At a time where the party in power is unpopular it makes sense to try and split the vote of the opposition, assuming that the supporters of the party in power will not swing that easily. So it's easier for the paid trolls to just go online saying "they are all the same, don't vote" or "vote for a real alternative" than trying to convince the opposition that they should switch to the status quo. On top of that, it's almost impossible to set up things for an electoral system reform when the party in power has nothing to gain from it.

Apart from the fact that it would be literally the "christian" thing to do (James 2:14-17, Proverbs 19:17, Matthew 25:31-46 ... whatever, that silly book is full of this stuff) , the real reason why the US participated in other country aid programs is soft power. Having a portion of the world see the US as "the good guys" has serious political advantages, and limits the control that other countries can have on those populations when they are allowed to take over the role of "good guy". etting them go just adds to the pool of potential future enemies. And the political gain is huge compared to the material cost.

You are assuming that the Apple buyers would not pay that 25% extra. My gut feeling is that they will gladly pay 25% more just to show that they can. There's a whole category of people that will buy a more expensive and objectively crappier car to show off. Who will be impacted is other smartphone manufacturers if the tariff applies to them as well, and the low income people that buys them. Import tariffs are almost without exception a tax on the poor.
