It's not a zero sum game. You don't have to make a profit at the expense of others; you can also do so in benefitting them. I mean, most businesses would insist that this is what they do, including Clearview, but many are simply lying, and many others have been overcome by cognitive dissonance. As the old adage says, "it's impossible to convince a man of something that will cost him his livelihood."

Signal is very slowly working on becoming accessible without a phone number. The thing about Signal is that their entire raison d'être is to do things right and securely, and to do it right the first time. This means that major changes take time. If you want (any given feature) fast, you're looking in the wrong place.

There were other pandemics in the 20th century. The next deadliest is HIV/AIDS that has so far has had a death toll about on the order of magnitude of Spanish Flu. There were a few other flu pandemics with total death tolls about where COVID-19 is at now. As a total non-expert making wild speculations, we were much more internationally mobile in 2019 than in the 50s or 60s, which almost certainly increased the spread of this pandemic. The Spanish Flu is thought to have originated in the USA and was spread worldwide by American soldiers during WWI, so it had the travel angle going for it too.

The thing is, this isn't just a cost analysis; the value of beauty and its benefits to human well-being are vastly underestimated in these sorts of discussions. Of course this won't make much sense to city dwellers who can't really see the sky anyway (I am in that group), but there is something profoundly human and healthy about marveling at the beauty of the night sky (or unspoiled wilderness, or an ocean, or a mountain range, or any other natural phenomenon). Even expanding knowledge and scientific progress shouldn't be pursued at the expense of such unquantifiable benefits.

Yeah, I had a G (5 I think, but I'm not sure) that had its charging port die in less than eight months. I'd also changed roms (this was the reason I'd purchased the phone), so no warranty. Tried replacing the power port myself, but every replacement I found online was missing a capacitor and so didn't work, I think they were for a very slightly different model.
