It's not that special and it's not just iPhones it works on Android as well.

Your carrier (AT&T/Verizon/T-Mo/MVMO's) can install non-GUI software on any phone in the network without your permission or knowledge.
This software is always analytical - as in gathering data for said carrier or whoever is paying them shit tons of money (like 3 letter agencies).

To make that phone work on a network you've given them half your key from the jump the only way to half ass stop it is to install something like GraphiteOS or LineageOS and sandbox the shit out of the carrier based side of the connection.

As to how I would know that? I've worked for every major carrier except Verizon in the enterprise hardware side and I've seen it in action as well as being the "man in the middle" guy cracking packet encryption with big iron F5's.

It's not anything new, exciting or hush-hush. It's been like this since Bush Jr. installed fiber splits in AT&T's DC's.

That's a orange vs apple comparison.

Anything being downloaded from F-Droid has had a security audit all the way up to a full code audit depending on what it's trying to do.
Anything being downloaded from the Google Play Store is an un-managed shit show that can never be trusted.

Absolutely nothing can convince me the version from the Play Store is the same code as on F-Droid without a full audit.
The fact that even fucking Google is pumping there breaks on complete file system access means something is wrong.

Repeat after me kids - no software should have ring-0 control of the hardware/file system.

No AI didn't devalue the meaning of the word "Engineer" it was hopped up programmers 20 years ago that thought they were the equivalent of hardware engineers let alone the big "E" graduate program grads without a single math or science class to there name.

Show me a programmer that can do advanced math and I guarantee it's someone with a math degree pretending to be a programmer.

So your saying you've never even used WSL2 and your an idiot, got it.

WSL2 doesn't give you a full Linux environment it's a subset of bash commands, a 5.15 kernel and the ability to launch graphical UI's from bash.
No one is running a Linux desktop from WSL2. The most handy GUI I run is Remmina which beats the hell out of RDC.

What we do use it for is Bind9 dns commands (dig for starts), network tools, etc because our work does not allow us to run anything but Win11 and getting windows based tools installed is nearly impossible but I can install WSL2 and Windows Terminal on any machine and apt install anything I want.

Ping and Curl is for programs I'm an actual hardware Eng.

Submission + - Antarctica's Ice Sheet Grows for the First Time in Decades

RoccamOccam writes: Previous studies have consistently shown a long-term trend of mass loss, particularly in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula, while glaciers in East Antarctica appeared relatively stable. However, a recent study led by Dr. Wang and Prof. Shen at Tongji University has found a surprising shift: between 2021 and 2023, the AIS experienced a record-breaking increase in overall mass.
