AI is also a poster child for the problem of SaaS. Saas while possibly lucrative, creates a twisted relationship with your users. In many cases, the users become the product and there is a perversion of the value of work.

Netflix, Spotify, etc are great. But with the buffet style... people become mentally prohibited form purchasing the music video or other creative product. Furthermore, that savings is taken from the artist hurting the whole ecosystem.

In the case of AI platforms, if you are not paying your inputs are used to train future models without any real warning. What is supposed to be a service is a secret mining tool. That data is also sold to other companies... because people are conditioned not to pay for a service.

The internet needs a rework. Companies need a rework. Laws need a rework. Everything that is being done now is breaking old assumptions about good will of everyone involved. People deserve to be payed for their work. People making things deserve respect.

An idiot compared this to book burning in a previous thread. Someone reading a book does not cause this kind of nuisance to other people. AI is being forced inappropriately into peoples lives with no opt out *everywhere*. Outside of school, no one is forcing you to read a book, which largely separates this from your example of book burning. Books also do not spy on you, either. Or actively break public spaces. Or force you to question if something you received is real.

If I am going to be nice, Silicon Valley and Wallstreet created a huge PR problem for AI of their own making. I do not understand why you would be praising that or sugar coating any of this.

Unless you are one of the ones spouting the mantra of our AI overlords that "we don't need humans anymore" while simultaneously brazenly stealing work while ignoring licenses... I don't think surpassing Teams will be much of a challenge.

Submission + - The Criminality of AI Translation on your Phone 1

BitterEpic writes: Hey all, I am asking slashdot for your thoughts. I live in Japan where there are laws protecting your privacy and usage of your likeness. Along with laws enforcing Portrait Rights, in 2026 Japan has also started to extend this concept to voice.

One of the outcomes of this is that (along with laws that enforce phone cameras make a shutter sound), people have the right to approach you and force you to delete any photo or video you have taken of them on the spot. If you don't, you are under grounds for legal action.

At my work, it has become popular for Americans to use AI translation, where the audio is sent to a external server where it may be stored and used for training data. I never gave consent for this and as a YouTuber I can sense that this may be used to reproduce my license in the future without permission. I have given a request that the team members remove my audio and give me details of the app in hour it stores my voice. One team member left the Teams chat and the other has avoided giving a response for a week.

My next steps are to next go to HR before filing a police report. If you were me, what would you do? Do you have similar protections in law in your country for protecting use of your likeness? Why do people ignore common sense in this age of AI? I mean... one Team member has said I am not allowed to take a photo of them.... but hey are sending my voice to a non-company authorized app using their phone and that is somehow different?

I miss Linux where I could use sloppy focus and disable click to raise so this was a non-issue, but I have been pulled into the mac ecosystem for a while now..

I've considered donating $5 a month to Firefox to suppor the browser, but the only options i see seem to support AI. In japan, you can't pay for relay or the vpn.
