Journal Bill Dawg's Journal: a new basic human right for the Left to discover 7

"You [Google] only make shitty decisions lately. [...] The government should provide the google search service as now it's like a public utility and the rest of Google can be safely shut down. For the good of everybody."

If everyone should be provided broadband, because it's a necessity of modern life, then surely Internet search is just as fundamental to today's existence. We should socialize Google for the greater good.

I've gathered Barb, mcgrew, and DR are more than commie enough to think this is good thing (and not worry at all about its appropriateness in a free country). Just unsure about fusta. (Did he go and find a life outside of /.?)

  • Competition is good. There are other independent search engines (I used to work for one).

As for "free broadband", I'm in favor of municipalities running their own internet infrastructure. It is now cheaper than ever before to do so, since it's no longer necessary to dig up streets and lawns - just do like the big boys are doing to cut their costs by installing a bunch of wireless access points. This could provide a basic service subsidized by taxpayers (all of whom will benefit); anyone wanting more is fr

    • There's good reason two of the principles of the Right is that govt. should have a limited, and well-defined, role in things. The problem with deciding that it's not right that the poor doesn't have x, and deciding that govt. should get in the business of providing x, to provide it to the poor, is that pretty soon some people further decide that it's not right that anyone else but govt. is in the business of providing x.

Your muni broadband for the poor will just proceed like health insurance in this countr

      • I never said anything about muni broadband for the poor. It was for everyone, all the citizens. Everyone can get the base service, and. as I wrote, "anyone wanting more is free to buy it from the city or another provider."

Also, as far as competence is concerned, private business has a long history of both incompetence (that's why bankruptcies exist) and screwing over the customer (cable, satellite, internet providers).

Canada has a universal health care system, but you're still free to buy additional cover

        • YMMV. Here in the U.S., 1) govt. is a total fuckup, and 2) our Lefties want it to completely take over things.

Just like some countries can have guns without all the gun violence, maybe some countries can have some socialism without their Lefties getting all fucking religious about it. Not here, tho.

  • Nothing else matters. Y'all have fun now, heah?

Human beings were created by water to transport it uphill.
