Well we had synchronous electric clocks that relied on the AC mains power for a long time...unless you lived in an areas with regular 'brownouts' they work pretty well

Indeed, but that was not the point. It was about making 'programming (ahem) more accessible. Which it did.
Thanks to the law of unintended consequences, this then led to enthusiastic amateurs spending hours crafting business-critical applications without any experienced oversight, with endless hilarity being the result.
Rather like Excel macros, or ActiveX; I'm sure many of us here have plenty of horror stories about replaces systems build those.
My fav? A Financial Director who'd spent untold hours writing an entire Fixed Assets management system in Excel; proudly showed it to me. I typed in a few invalid values (negative numbers, bad dates) and of course it shit the bed every time...a few weeks later his PC crashed (no backups) and he lost everything.
Mod up
I should have added to my original post...also, if Amazon, Apple and Google are so massive, cash-rich and tech-savvy, how come Alexa, Siri and Hey Google suck so badly?
ChatGPT got amazing traction in the wider market; it seems like everyone has tried it.
That certainly got GAFAM's attention, forcing Google to rush out BARD which impressed so deeply it wiped out $100Bn in stock value overnight. Oops.
As has been pointed out here, ChatGPT is not even that sophisticated; it's just a (pretty good) weak AI chatbot.
Wait until the real stuff gets here...
So, if you can't beat them, shut 'em down. A page out of the M$ playbook, Apple.
Innovate guys, you've got the cash.
Let me guess, try the veal?
Which cretin marked this troll? Very valid points, succinctly put. This is a very cheap way to aggressively gather operational information close to real combat conditions.
You make a good point, but NOTAMs still have their place. Flights between two uncontrolled airports comes to mind, although of course if you're paranoid like me you'll call your destination beforehand in that case. The wider question is of course 1. How can you fuck up something so simple and 2. How easy and cheap would it be to replace the current system with a web-based simple text solution?
Cmon guys mod up
We're already there, especially the Chinese, Russians etc
Try eBay but check they support a remote and sound (many dumb panels don't) and they're not burnt out already
Great comment, sorry no mod points today
Why is this a troll? Look at the facts - he's absolutely right.
You don't have to know how the computer works, just how to work the computer.
