  • I think you have written the most salient description about the problems and issues with this year's fervor over 'Happy Holidays'... I have been aghast and puzzled at the craziness this year, the boycotts, the stories in the media of persecution - because a store didn't put "Merry Christmas" on their storefront or print ads? A War on Christmas? I've noticed they are focused on commercial establishments, while I remember growing up learning that Christmas was not about.. commercialism.

    • It's interesting to look at the secular nature of Christmas in other countries. Take for instance Japan, where there is not the least bit of hint of religious implication to the celebration of Christmas. Christmas as a capitalistic concept is one that the United States has promoted to the rest of the world and all meaning other than "getting and giving stuff" has largely been stripped out of the holiday.

      • Well put. It would be wonderful if people started accounting for factors of environment and humanity in their accounting practices, instead of the bottom line. Unfortunately, things just don't work that way and as much as I wrack my head over it, I can't come up with a logical path in that direction. It will take a lot of changes and a lot of time.
