7. That everyone has known about this since it was first reported in aroud 2015, but everyone has done their best to conspicuously ignore it.

It was first reported long before then, from 2009 according to the wikipedia article. I remember reading about it in https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theregister.com%2F at about that time, and saw articles in Private Eye not long after.

We've all learned to ignore apostrophes if needed in real life, without IT, and make other adjustments in pattern matching. When you misused "THAT" in capitals (misused in my eyes at least), I did not even see it the first time I read it. We can adapt, software should be able to do it too.

And software does change and adapt. I just did a google search for "st mary at finchley". The top result was the correct one, a Wikipedia article for "St Mary-at-Finchley Church" (I never knew the name was actually hyphenated) .

Would it not be more effective to treat the SMT like other workers, and just sack them forthwith if or when there is insufficient progress?

Not just that. My Chromebook, Asus 434T, was introduced in 2019 and bought by me in 2020 with an advertised update duration at that time to about 2025. This has now been extended to 2029, presumably the date of first introduction. For my light use as a holiday laptop, it has been near perfect (some quibbles about the keyboard, but that was Asus making it funky or something).
