Yes, but in England a semi is half of a pair of houses with a party wall.
I've seen lots of semis on the roads in the UK, this sort being half of a temporary building on the back of a lorry, commonly called a PortaKabin but that's a trademark. When I say "lorry" I mean haulage vehicle, not a parrot, of course. 'Tain't what you say, it's how you say it. That's 'taint as in "it is not", not taint as in spoil.

English, possibly the most ambiguous language in the world, and hence ideal for legislation.

To quote Google's AI summary: "Yes, generally, more younger people (ages 16-34) fall for scams than older individuals (55 and over). Studies indicate that a significant percentage of younger adults have been scammed, especially in the realm of purchase scams. For example, in the Spring/Summer of 2024, 86% of individuals who lost money to purchase scams were under 55. ". (Assuming that's not me infringing copyright at some level or another.)

It's not clear what they mean by "fast". A fast programming language is, I would guess, one that lets you write a program quickly, so that tends to mean terse syntax, powerful features and a rich library of useful functions. Python fits that list, though I don't use it or like it myself. Alternatively, given the rest of the article, a "fast" language lets you write high-performance programs, and that's mostly down to code generation and optimization, which are far more controlled by compilers than the language, and/or libraries of high-performance code (such as NumPy, the library that makes many Python programs perform acceptably).
There's a third definition - a "fast" language is one that's quick to learn, which sadly marks Rust down...

I remember flying over Spain once and thinking "that's a strange looking lake", before realizing I was looking at a field of polytunnel greenhouses stretching as far as I could see (from a jet plane).

Greenhouses are, duh, designed to retain heat. It doesn't turn into food or compost, so how many Calories or KWh does an acre of greenhouse capture?

Comment Shame we don't get the same for politicians (Score 1) 132

Politicians and lawyers find it easy to hold others to standards they themselves can never approach. Software always contains bugs - good software has very few, but they're still there. Given that a program almost never runs in isolation, how will the courts decide which bit (user, application, libraries, kernel, compiler, hardware) is responsible. Nah, they'll go for joint liability as that way they can claim the maximum damages from everybody's pockets.
If this goes through, I guess all open source software will have to be cancelled.
