We're just getting to grips with how our own star and.solar system work. From there we look at local star systems and apply the same insights. Then we make the magic leap to understanding things at a galactic scale. Out knowledge is already insufficient so we need to invent stuff like dark matter to explain the rotation of galaxies and cosmic lensing. Fuck I wish I could live for another thousand years ...
