Journal Alioth's Journal: More messing around with the digital camera 3

So despite the appaling forecast, we got a short break in the weather. Not exactly bright and sunny, but not belting with rain. So I went out to the Chasms to play with the new camera.

Observations - it's just so cool to be able to change ISO setting on a whim. Getting frustrated with not getting a fast exposure speed when trying to get a drop of water falling I remembered...just jack up the ISO setting until I get a fast exposure speed. (Of course there is a tradeoff, just like film - with digital, more noise).

The other nice thing is switching to continuous mode just to get that right shot with something that's moving...no worries about wasting film, and the D70s has a big buffer so you can keep shooting for quite some time before it has to slow down for the flash card. But mainly, you don't cost yourself a 36 exposure film in 10 seconds!

However, I didn't do so well with my old 300mm telephoto - it seems like there's a touch of aberration. Or it might be photographer error (most probable). I forgot to bring the lens hood for that lens, and also I was using it on manual focus to try and get a decent shot of some birds.

Anyway, the results (which say I need more practise, it's been ages since I've actually done proper photography):

As for backup strategies...well, I'm pleased to see Apple iPhoto keeps all the metadata in nice, transparently clear XML so I don't have to worry about iPhoto going obsolete and leaving me without the metadata. Since I have a dedicated server in another continent - I just rsync the entire library to the remote server after each session. I love rsync.

  • I spotted one I really liked and immediately attempted to click the Favorite button. Creature of habit am I.

I’ll have my dSLR soon, and one of the first things I wanna do is go up in my buddy’s Cessna. I’m not sure if attempting to use my small tripod would help or hinder. Got any good tips for such a thing?

    • Tripod probably won't be much help - depending on what you want to do, then higher ISO numbers and faster shutter speeds may. Assuming it's nothing fancy like a Cessna 421 (which doesn't have this feature), opening the window will help a lot (although it gets windy and cold inside).

Oh by the way, you can steer a light Cessna single with the doors. Somewhat counter-intuitively, the plane turns AWAY from the door that's opened (although if you think about the aerodynamics, this makes perfect sense - you're ac
  • It gets quite addictive once you start using it. I'm currently using it to copy large amounts of data across the country via ssh.

Your camera looks cool as well :)
